Guest Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Hi, Been trawling the internet for hours now and am not getting very far on planning for my next topic of celebrations/festivals-anyone got any medium term planning with activities they wouldn't mind sharing? Wanting to cover-bonfire night, diwali, eid, hannuka and christmas if possible. Thanks all
AnonyMouse_26037 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Will have a think - have done them with a bit more of a focus for my year ones. Bonfire night - we watched a video of an explosion (it might have been a pretend Houses of Parliament one - we had access to espresso at school at the time and there were lots of resources on there). We about the different colours of the explosion and then painted a huge piece of paper in fire colours. We tore it into flame shapes and made a bonfire in the corner of our reading corner, complete with real twigs. We draped dark fabric at the top of the corner and hung our glittery firework pictures there. Lots of vocab/sound work around firework noises. We talked about bonfire night food (some of my favourites!) and then baked new potatoes, looking at how they changed inside, writing 'hot tin' signs to keep the other teachers safe in the staff room! Finally ate them round the bonfire. We did a bit of talking about how the clothes were different at that time. I think when we did Diwali we read the story then made puppets - exploring different joining techniques. Each children painted a picture of a different part of the story then we sequenced them and they wrote captions (at varying levels!) to tell the story - that made a really nice display. We did some work on changing materials and used clay to make diva lamps - looking at how it changed after it was dry.
Guest ChunkyMan Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Hi Swilde, I found this somewhere on here and it gave me some ideas. festivals1.doc

Guest Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Do you know the Festival Time series of books by Jonny Zucker? I use them with Reception for festivals throughout the year. I like them very much and they strike a chord with the children. We are quite multi-cultural and one of the children is always able to add some details from personal experience. There isn't a book for every festival though
Helen Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Have you found our series on festivals here? :1b 1
