Spongey surface care!

In our outdoor area we have a section which is the black stuff that doesn't hurt you if you fall on it (in theory) and in summer our climbing frame is on it. In winter it's a bit of a nuisance. We usually have big blocks and balance beams on it, but in very cold weather it's the slippiest part of the playground ( other than our 6ft square of decking!!) and requires heavy gritting if normal ice.

On Monday when it was snowy it was fine to go on, but it's now covered in thick, solid ice and as the temp stayed below freezing all day, it's showing no sign of going. We don't feel it's safe to be out on sheet ice, but can't block access to it. Our caretaker tells me it's cos it 'holds water' so freezes more than the playground!

Does anyone else have a solution - we want to be out and are going stir crazy!!!

We have the same surface it is a real nuisance in winter. We have been told not to use grit or salt. A product called ice melt is what we purchase. You can get it on line from a company called gives for less, just google ice melt and you will find the company.
