Music In Sen

Ok, so I'm a musician, have been since the age of 7, but I've just been told as I walked out of the door today that I'm going to become music co-ordinator in my new school (SLD/PMLD for those that don't know!) Does anyone know of anything good I can use to help make a scheme or even a scheme designed for SEN?! The kids get half a term each term with a team called Music Unlimited, but I need something for them to do when they aren't getting that. Any ideas anyone?!

HELP!

Hi Nichola.

I have a book called 'The Music Makers Approach' 'Inclusive activities for young children with special educational needs' by Hannah Mortimer, published by NASEN. It provides a good range of ideas for activities for young children with SEN.

Hope this helps.

G.

I think I could adapt some stuff for the SLD children, but I really need advice for the PMLD children. There must be SOMETHING out there as I'm not the only music co-ordinator in a special school!

Thanks for that book Goldilocks, I'll have a look and see if I can find it.

Any more ideas folks?

I have books like that, but I don't think there is a scheme in school. I use books like that to suppliment my own lessons but need something to form a scheme from and was just wondering if anyone knew of anything as we have kids from nursery to Y6. Thanks though :)

I teach in a special school. (SLD) We have a fantastic music specialist who comes from the county. She has transformed singing within the school. We have whole school singing (3-14 at present). This used to be dire but now we sing loads of action songs, songs from a series called Songs For Every Day/Assembly/Easter etc. Also loads of Guide songs, lots of action which even the most disabled enjoy even if they can't sing or do many actions. we also use Music Express, slow the speed of lesson down, one lesson plan may take three or four weeks.

Ahh, I've just started doing some of music express with my class, to try it out with them. I'm using the FS stage one with my Y3/4 SLD/PMLD group and they LOVE it! They love the repetition in the songs and they are just short enough for their concentration span! School has a company come in and do some session with them for half a term each term, so just need stuff to put with it as well as bringing in the use of instruments. I have a totally music loving class, some of whom can pick up a new song and remember it by just hearing it a couple of times! (although not clearly saying the words you can tel lthey know it!)

I think the series you need is out of a catalogue called Out of the Ark. Excellent simple songs, suitable for older SLD/PMLD e.g. an ssembly one called 'If you're feeling sad and weary and you're down in the dumps' pretty repetitve, very catchy and best of all FUN! Highly recomend them all
