UoW Development matters statement help!

Hi all,

At the moment, I have a few children whose 'next step' is "know some of the things that make them unique, and can talk about some of the sims and diffs in relation to friends and family'. So far the children have enjoyed making their mini-me on the computer - selecting the correct hair, eyes, face shape, mouth etc and looking at each others once they are printed. They have also been very interested in a book about African children - commenting on what is the same and different about their lives and cloths etc. We're also creating an outdoor display about things we are good at outside. Any other ideas? We comment on what different children like/dislike, favourite things etc but not sure how to extend this further?

we've done 3D block graph of favourite flavour of milkshake, then used info for snack bar, saying we need to know how much of each flavour to make, then making it for next day. so covering maths too. got to get it in everywhere!!! also put multilink cubes on carpet and all key group take their favourite colour and discuss, displaying in block graph. we try to always bring it up incidently too, e.g. chatted about pets this week and then discussed who had the same pets, who was the only one to have a particular pet (a giant land snail no less!!), and who doesn't have any pets. quite easy to pop into conversation!! x

we spent some time talking about what our childrens' parents did for jobs and used their knowledge to plan extensions to the role play area, over a term we had used the area as a pub ( one set of parents own a pub), a hairdressers, a sweet shop ( very popular one!), a car garage with mechanics, a hospital, a bakery ( for a parent who did not work but who 'makes scrummy cakes') etc. It was lovely way for the children to look at differences and similarities in thier lives and got parents involved supplying us with props and background info

Our children enjoyed looking at the book "All Kinds of People" which has fold out bits and flaps with a text that goes along the lines of "some people are tall.. (fold out illustration of someone tall) others are short... Some people like this, others like that, some have glasses, some have freckles etc.. etc..

 

We shared the story with a small group of children with that next step and they loved it and wanted to show their friends. In the group I modelled "I have glasses like this boy and Miss M (Nursery nurse) has freckles like this lady etc. When observing them looking at the book together there was a lot of that kind of talk but linked to themselves and their families.

 

We also did lots of the ideas above and found that once they got started noticing and commenting on the similarities and differences it was a thread that ran through a lot of their conversations.
