Hi we do home visits at our sessional Pre-school. We go through all personal details forms, consent forms, proof of d.o.b at this visit. We also have two sheets one is "this is me"and the other is "all about me". One the children can either draw a picture of themselves or attach a photograph of themselves, the other has boxes to fill in which say, my parents names, family members, any pets, likes, dislikes etc. these become the start of their Learning Journals with us.

Two staff go on them, one senior member and the child's key person. We also take a folder with some puzzles, books etc. We have had a very positive response after starting these last summer.

Hope this is of some help.

Can I ask you manage the staffing at the setting while there are two people out? That is the main thing that stops us doing home visits. I feel we would have to call in people on their day off to do them as we couldn't spare two members of staff from the children that are in that day.

Hi depending when the children are to start, some are covered during session times, others after our sessions finish or before the beginning of the new term. All staff get paid for any additional hours but really feel its worth the time and effort in the long run.

This is what put me off doing it Melba....the cost was going to be around £3000 to support all the home visits, insurance for the car and the petrol costs. We do however do a staggered start for the children and so spend the time with the parents in the setting. For me this works better and i don't feel i'm putting parents under pressure to ensure their house is presentable!

We do the staggered starts too, both staff and I feel much more comfortable doing it that way.

A local school nursery does home visits and I know a lot of parents hate it, my children are a bit older now but I wouldn't have liked it.

We have been doing Home visits now for about 18 months, yes it does mean two staff out of nursery for about an hour, but I feel the benefits far outweigh the pitfalls and our parents are really keen about them - we have even had parents choose our setting over other local settings because 'we are willing to take time to get to know our families in their own homes, not just expect us ( parents) to fit in with you' - this was a quote from a parent when we recently did a Q&A session at one of our stay and play sessions.

redjayne...how many visits do you do in an hour? ...in fact how many do you do in total?

Do you think your parents would tell you if they didn't want you to come ....in fact do you give them this option? what happens about your working parents, you say you do it during the day, would you do them in the evening if asked?

sorry this sounds a bit grumpy.....not feeling well so possibly not well written

One visit in about an hour - allowing for travelling time etc - but thats an average - parents are given the option to have or not to have - only had one so far that has declined. We do lots during the august holiday and first few weeks of September due to it being our largest 'new' intake, the rest of the year its about 2-3 a week, and yes we can do twilight visits if asked, as we are open to 6pm as a Day Nursery and also offer twilight stay and play sessions it's no hassle to do home visits then also. In the last year we have probably done about 40 - it is still a fairly new idea but one we will stick with as it seems to work.

Thanks Redjayne... :1b

It's great to know how people are fitting it in. I'm still not convinced it's for us yet...but i'll keep challenging myself to think about it ;) :P
