Guest
Hi I am currently working 25 hours at present. 15 hours in year one 10 year 6 with statemented children for speech and language. Another year 6 child is about to get a statement in the same class that I work. Am I allowed to work with her alongside the other year 6 or would someone new have to brought in. I have recently been supporting her as she sits on the same table. Its just 25 hours dont include lunch, but I would like to continue helping her. Is it up to the LEA or headteacher who supports the statement. Anyone any clues.... Mandi
Guest
Hi Mandi I think If a child is to be put on action or action plus then you could do the hours, if more hours are needed then I think officially someone has to do each childs hours. But there may be loopholes around this Jo
Guest
LEAs allocate funding in different ways, in theory schools decide how the money is spent. But the money does not stretch very far, by the time schools have "bought into " the various support services such as Educational Psychology, SALT there may not be very much left over for support in the classroom. Steve
Nothing to add practically Mandi - I just would like to say it's great that you have been and would like to continue to support her. Isn't that displaying the soul of a teacher?

However the little girl, is being given a specialist teacher who is trained for dyslexia. Apparently our lea have trained a lot of teachers to become specialist in this area. Hope they do it for speech and language or I will be out of a job.... Thanks though that was nice to hear... Mand

Guest
This is where all or most of her funding could be going. She will be expected to manage the rest of the time unsupported. It may seem unfair but thats the way the system works, or doesn't.
AnonyMouse_73
Hi Mandi. I believe that if the speacil need is for speech and langauge then it would be acceptable to support 2 such chidlren wihtin the same class, and I doubt very much that many schools could fund 2 assts for 2 children in the same class unlesss their needs are very complex. It would be down to the school but I know we certainly wouldnt fund 2 assts in that case. We have 2 chidlren in reception who have complex physical needs and yet only one asst, who sadly cant be in 2 places at the same time..(we have considered cloning her...) Why dont you talk to the SENCO or the Head about this?
AnonyMouse_4544
I think it very much depends on individual LEA policies. We have 2 SEN assistants which the school funds to support 2 children in different Key Stages both with physical needs. Previously we had 1 LEA funded SEN assistant to cover ALL children with statements in the school!
Guest
thanks for all your advice. Spoke to our senco on friday. Because this pupil is dyslexic they are employing a special teacher which our Lea have trained up. So now we have our senco who is the teacher in the class, me as a personal welfare assistant for speech and language (LSA I prefer if anyone could tell me the differeance I would be grateful) a Teaching assiant and specialist teacher. 4 adults in a year 6 class of 25..incredible Its a waste....
