Learning journals- by term or by ELG?

Hi,

 

I've always organised learning journals by half termas it shows progression so well however, when it comes to completing the profiles it does make it harder to go through from the beginning finding the evidence for each ELG. I wondered if anyone else has started arranging them by ELG and cross referencing where appropriate.

 

Seem to be pro's and cons to each way!

Having just started at a new setting ( playgroup) I have found half the staff organise by half terms and half by ELG's!

I favour the half terms as like you say it shows progression and its easier to co ordinate the next steps into the planning as they go in date order. as long as there is cross referencing to the ELG I think it 'reads' better, especially when sitting down with the child or/and parents and going through it with them.

Just been told ours dont show progression what do u put in yours.

Hi we do ours by date order of evidence gathered through a range of media and tools. We are a Pre-school so no profile for us at the moment. We use the Development matters statements as a guide to learning achieved and for any next steps. We also use a progress wheel each term and a learning sheet for our progress check for our two to three year olds, which shows the prime and specific areas.

We do not expect our children to reach the ELGS by the time they leave us generally as most have moved onto school, although that's of course what we are aiming for.

Hope this helps. I know Ofsted want to see hard evidence on paper showing progression made or any early intervention applied.

we use the development matters statements and plot the observations/evidence against these. Each term is done in a different colour so it is really easy to see the progress of a child at any point . If they are with us for more than a year the coulours are just repeated but it is easy to see which is which becuase they follow the pattern (so red/green/blue/red/green/blue etc) we use this system for all of our children and we do have some on profile (because they are reception age)

Hi,

I have always done mine by date order due to the amount of cross-over between different AOLs - it would mean either cross-referencing all the time or writing the same obs up a number of times.

We keep a track-record of observations - age and stage and aspect in number order so you can see the progression in each AOL over the year through this.
