We have had 10 chicks hatch this week - from the 12 incubated eggs!!!!

The children (and staff) have been SO excited - it was just amazing. We were lucky enough to watch 1 chick hatch from its shell. :o:D

Just had to share my excitement. :P

I use my own incubator - it's small (for 12 eggs) and my hens oblige me with the eggs (this batch was Old English Pheasant Fowl and Ixworth). I checked on the last two eggs before leaving school - to watch what is probably going to be the last egg hatch - so sweet and will look prettier tomorrow when it has dried off.

I stayed up all night a couple of years ago as our chicks hatched at work. So stressful. One couldn't break out and was at it for hours and in the end I had to very very gently use tweezers to help. Not recommened as they can bleed to death. All hatched fine and it was wonderful. Hubby thought I was mad. Sadly all ours hatched overnight so the children missed it but were still really excited when they came in.

Despite cleaning out the cage each day they got really smelly though. We had duckings at home and my gosh can they poop.

You have all got me broody now. I will moot the idea to my staff tomorrow. All the last lot live in my sister's large garden in the countryside I suppose I better warn her there may be more coming.

We use our own incubator too. This year I bought a 'brooder' heater instead of the huge heat lamp we used to use which always worried me a bit. I got them both from Incubators Online. We got our Indian Runner Duck eggs from Poplar Farm Cottage in Lincolnshire. They came in the post - very well wrapped!
