Twitter, can you sell it to me?!

Recommended Posts

So now that sunnyday and I are following each other, all that needs to be resolved is who is the person with protected tweets that I thought might be her? And who I have asked to follow?

Not that I would 'out' anyone on here because a big part of the FSF experience is that we can hide behind our usernames and avatars, but I'll be interested to see who it is! :1b

Oh and for those of you who don't use twitter, if you don't want just anyone to see what you're tweeting, you can make your account private. People have to ask to follow you, and you can say whether they can or not. It means that whilst people can see that you have an account, anything you say can be kept away from the rest of twitter, and seen only by those people who you know and trust. My daughter has a private account, so that children and families from her school can't see what she gets up to online!

Thumperrabbit have you taken the pluge yet???

Me too! But really I just want to be able to have silly conversations with all of you (as well as eating your vegetables while I bake cakes (currently eating a scone I made the other day which I successfully froze and have a tea loaf about to go in the oven)!

Come on in, the welcome is always warm. I specialise in silly conversations, but I have to warn you that I will also tweet you photographs depicting images of severe apostrophe abuse, gig photos and (from time to time) photographs of extremely delicious puddings. Tomorrow night I shall be tweeting photos of a (hopefully) clear view of London from the top of the 02.

Come on ladies and gentlemen: what's not to love?

twitter is also quite a political and powerful place too. I have been shocked that the woman who has been campaigned for women to take their place with men on our banknotes has been subjected to a barrage of abuse (including threats of rape) for a solid 24 hours and is now campaigning for there to be a 'report abuse' button.

Today, historian Mary Beard appeared on Jeremy Vine's radio programme to talk about 'trolling' and was herself then subject to a particularly vile insult tweeted at her. When Jeremy Vine retweeted it, someone replied to ask if they'd like to have the perpetrator's mum's home address so that she could be made aware of what her son was up to. This prompted a swift apology followed by another just to make sure they believed he was sorry.

So it isn't all sweetness and light there. :( Unlike the Forum, twitter isn't moderated. If something untoward slips through here there's usually a moderator on hand to remove it quickly, whereas on twitter it can take a long time to get something removed. Although the 'block' feature is powerful and you can report people for spam so we aren't completely defenceless.

On balance, I'd still recommend it. I've learned so much from my time there, and not all of it is useless trivia. :P

I think Twitter will develop its own courtesy and ethos ecosystem in time, especially as the idiots get exposed to the limelight like those assaulting the woman campaigning for women to be more fairly represented on banknotes. In the early days, you'd be surprised at some of the posts/emails here.

Rea, what's a noggle? I could only find this sort of beastie via a google search...

Sadly I don't have one of those to help with my twitter usage.

I followed Maz for a while on Twitter. Found she actually had a life outside of early years. Was so envious I had to unfollow her. One day I'll want to know about festivals and bands and fun stuff. For the now I have to concentrate on learning a trade and fixing a house and running a family and running a business.

:( H

Are you mad, Honey? Don't you think if I had any kind of life I'd spend less time on twitter (and on here) and more time out and about doing stuff?

Just goest to show though, I have no idea how many followers I have, and so I don't notice if someone unfollows me. I have a friend who uses an app to keep a track of his weekly statistics. Now that is sad!
