Guest
Analysis of our profile scores has shown we need to focus on raising the achievement of our boys, especially in the area of writing. We are thinking about ways to make the learning environment appeal more to boys. Does anyone have any good ideas for motivating boys generally and, in particular, for getting them interesting writing? Thank you everyone. AnonyMouse_47127
Hi I can only say what we did but it did have an impact on boys writing. After observing our boys we found they spent most of their time outside. So we focused our efforts on writing opportunities outside. We also ran with themes that captured the boys - pirates, superheroes, transport. Writing as part of the play generating a need within the play - parking tickets, treasure maps etc
Guest
making models from construction kits and they write their name so we know who made it? or label e.g. my car etc. or instructions for how to make it? write their name on easel to show they are waiting for a turn on computer or with special toy e.g. remote control car! have a favourite tv character e.g. bob the builder e-mail them with a problem or leave a letter - they could reply. not had reception for a while now!! x

AnonyMouse_3735
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.410506749018644.99593.197403886995599&type=3 above link is for a facbook page.. sorry but thta is the only place it is available.. but it is for an outdoor writing kit..with pictures and ideas.. as a summary it is by Helen Bromley, and early years trainer.. and she used a gardeners tool bag, filling it with items for writing and drawing on, clipboards/ bingo boards work well , log slices ( florist or hobbycraft or mindstretchers do them)with dry wipe pen, fun pencils, giant pencils, playground chalks, compass, small globe, waterproof notebook (scuba suppliers) any item that could be useful in encouraging writing in one place and easy to move around.. have used similar in making small ones with a few items in for individuals to either carry , or have as a mark making belt to werar, like a builders tool belt.. other things that did help were to have it in unusual places, we often found they would happily lay on the floor and do things in this line than sit at a table... sometimes they stayed for aged when it was presented in a creative way
AnonyMouse_39998
we use clip boards. indoors and outdoors ...the boys wanted to make treasure maps once! they were all engaged in pirate play as we had small word boats and pirates out on the floor, some of the boys arrived in dressing up! I used the back of a role of wall paper and we created foot prints ( for foot prints in the sand) and x marks the spot...we gave the children large pieces of paper and they created maps and marked on the maps crocodiles, swaps and all sorts of features! some marked to represent gold and silver! we score games of skittles and other games, that brings out the competative nature in some of our boys lol

Guest
Thank you all very much. Sorry for delay in replying - it's been a bit of a week! We will be watching the children carefully and trying to follow their interests. At the moment it seems to be cars and catapaults! Just wondered if anything had really worked for others. I will look carefully at all the links so thank you for the ideas :1b
