AnonyMouse_46159
Have a new child started today who bit quite badly one of our long term children.Parent was absolutely horrified despite me assuring her that children do sometimes bite and we will be keeping a very close eye on new child. What do you all do in these circumstances ?
AnonyMouse_6721
We have a biter this year! One have been one to one with him. Not ideal but necessary. It's probably down to delayed S & L so I have been working on this while with him.
AnonyMouse_19782
As you have already done. Talk to new mum asap and find out if there are any triggers for this behaviour, are there any other concerns with behaviour, development milestones etc. Have new child's key person by their side as much as is possible I have often found that the biter will seek outa the same child again - so keep a very close watch on the bitten child too. Praise any self control biter shows i.e., if they were about to bite and they either stopped themselves or key person reminds them not to when they are about to! AnonyMouse_11396
It's very distressing when this happens to everybody involved, and parents and children do need to realise you take their concerns very seriously.Close monitoring and observing I think is the key to see if there is any pattern of this type of behaviour. Not sure of the age of the child, or whether they have speech to advise further. You say they are new to your setting so maybe they are feeling overwhelmed, scared by the others within the group. I think close adult interaction is vital at this time, hoping it will soon pass.

AnonyMouse_35577
As well as already said we have a handout explaining how biting is a normal developmental stage, what the causes may be, what we do to try and prevent it etc it works in calming some parents but there are always some who react over emotionally to their child being bit. Guest
we have a robust biting policy and we give a copy to the parents involved so they know how we will be dealing with incidents. It is such a difficult emotive subject that by passing the policy onto all involved means that they can see how seriously we take these things. I would speak to the parent and share what tactics/strategies you will using the help her child learn to deal with emotions and control his urge to bite. If the biting is a prolonged episode then we have used chewtoys in the past
