AnonyMouse_35585
Hi We have a little boy at our setting who is quite good at numbers. He can count by rote to 15 and give us 1, 2or 3 items when we ask etc. Today we played a game with a dice and he was able to count the spots by touching one spot for each number (from 1-6) very confidently. Where would you put this in development matters? The only place I can see is in 40-60mths but he is only 29 months so dont want to put him higher than I should! Thanks Edited January 8, 2014 by klc106
Guest
you must place him where he fits securely and if this is at this band so be it, you must then bring him along in other areas without neglecting his very able ability with numbers.

AnonyMouse_73
Hi klc106, personally I dont think there is nearly enough information to lace the child in the 40-60 age band. I think that's the difficulty with taking isolated statements from the age band, rather than looking through them all and asking yourself 'is this typical of the child'. The 40-60 age band in maths contains about 15 statements of which just one or two are specifically about one to one correspondence. You mention that he can give you one or two objects, which is in the 22-36 age band, and that he counts by rote which is also in a lower band. I would be inclined to go back to those earlier bands and see, looking at the whole band, which is most typically like the child, and then make your judgment from there.
Guest
Exactly what I was saying she must place him where she Fidel's he fits, if everything else is pointing that way then he should be placed there regardless of his age but yes it is not just meeting one statement there are others if he meets more than maybe he is emerging

Guest
We've been putting them in the lower (due to not having other bits) but flagging/celebrating in the evidence/obs their other abilities from the higher. We put it down to doing lots of number rhymes, counting for a purpose very regularly so they become confident 1:1 counters (and some say how many they have after counting)
