road safety

Recommended Posts

hi, we have recently been given some resources relating to road safety which we have introduced to the children - they love them.

we would like to extend on these with learning about keeping safe by the road etc., - does anyone have any ideas / links that would help please/

also any links for pictures to colour / dot to dot pictures relating to the same would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks x

imo children of this age need to experience things first hand so take them out on a walk and talk about the dangers, discuss where good places to cross are, talk to a crossing patrol officer or a community warden. Then do the same walk with the children telling the adults what to do...they love being the teachers and you'll know if they've got it !

I guess it depends a bit on what resources you have been given. But I agree with finleysmaid - keep it real and I would also add stay away from colouring pictures and dot-to-dots! :1b If you're able to do as finleysmaid suggests and go for a 'road safety walk', then maybe you could set up some kind of outdoor role play - zebra crossing, lollipop person, road signs, police officer etc. You could then take it in all sorts of directions depending on what the children do, but you could easily introduce lots of mark-making, counting, talking about rules, talking about occupations and roles etc. etc. Have fun!
