Guest
Hi Can anyone help! We are starting a topic on witches and wizards after half term. Im going to have a witches house as the role play area and we are dressing up one day. Has anyone got any good ideas for this based on the 6 areas of learning Thanks
Guest
Our children often imagine the water tray is some kind of giant cauldron, and our planning for 'pouring' and 'capacity' is given a more imaginative 'potions' overview. This is particularly enhanced by providing plastic bottles in a variety of sizes and colouring the water with a few drops of food coloring. They have also been known to add a few plastic spiders to the mix. I guess you could provide a range of 'ingredients' and develop this into spell writing using Meg and Mog as a model. AnonyMouse_379
How about using the stories room on the broom and the traditional one hansel and gretel? The role play as a witches house will have so many opportunities for maths and writing- making spells, boxes and jars to store potion ingredients. have a letter arrive like in the jolly postman advertising supplies for sale. You could include mallable weork to make bats and spider for the potions, the witch wants a new pet cat, 3d modelling etc. sounds like fun L

The larger water tray contained slime made from soap flakes which changed colour daily and featured floating eyeballs (candles from ASDA) We printed stars and moons with flourescent paint on black paper to construct witches and wizards hats. Did bat shaped grafismo on the fine motor skills table and also carved pumpkins. outside we had rats and bats in the digging pit for the children to discover. we looked at spiders and snails on the investigation table with the aid of magnifying jars. on the maths table we sorted plastic hallowe'en creatures by colour, size and type. made sets of given numbers etc. small world we made the dark dark town from 'funnybones' we used the interactive whiteboard and a program called 2createastory to write our own scary stories with pictures and sound effects. role play we added masks and witches hats plus fabrics. listening area we had a cd called spooky wooky from Marks & Spencers also a cd of scary sound effects. We had the usual Winnie the witch, room on the broom and meg & mog stories and finished the week with a visit from Zoolab (Meg &Mog performance) plus fancy dress and BBQ. Guest
Thanks everyone- I like the idea of putting food colouring in the water. How could we use the stories for writing as the chn are still at the stage of writing just their name??? I find literacy so hard as this is my first Reception class as an NQT. Any ideas would be so much appreciated Thanks

Guest
Shakespeare! The witches’ scene in Macbeth. In a cavern, three witches circle a boiling cauldron. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. We have edited the full text as follows (omiting such as "finger of birth-strangled babe") with images from Google: Round about the cauldron go; In the poison'd entrails throw. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Fillet of a fenny snake, In the cauldron boil and bake. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg and owlet's wing. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf, Witches' mummy, maw and gulf. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Add therto a tiger’s chaudron, For the ingredients of our cauldron. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Make the gruel thick and slab: Add thereto a tiger's chaudron, For the ingredients of our cauldron. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Cool it with a baboon's blood, Then the charm is firm and good. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. And now about the cauldron sing, Live elves and fairies in a ring, Enchanting all that you put in. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
