AnonyMouse_29873 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hiya, I am currently studying first year foundation degree and we need to decide on a small scale research topic. I wanted to pick up on the ratio issue in baby rooms but tutor says it has to be ideally linked to my setting. So now I haven't a clue what to do - any suggestions ? Im interested in cognitive development - how differently children think and perceive compared to adults, but feel that maybe this is again too complex. Maybe around communication or how to talk to kids ? everything Im coming up with seems soo complex... thanks to anyone that has any ideas the kids on my books at the moment are one yr olds . feeling rather clueless
Guest youngrisers Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 How about looking at schemas? all children have different schemas which can be observed in very young children up to the end of foundation stage. This would give you an opportunity to observe first and note and record details of developing schemas showing cognitive development. early formation of language could be another area to look at too.
AnonyMouse_29873 Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 ooh thanks youngrisers, will have a look so the question would be Why do children have differing schemas or behaviour patterns for learning ? thanks
Guest youngrisers Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 glad to be of assistance. seems small scale research can be anything and everything that interest you.
AnonyMouse_8466 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 ooh thanks youngrisers, will have a look so the question would be Why do children have differing schemas or behaviour patterns for learning ? thanks My only worry about a 'why' question is that it suggests there will be an answer. How will you prove why a child has a schema? Especially as your sample of children to observe and gather data on is likely to be small. Presumably you have a tutor who is supervising your project - they'll be able to advise but I'd think about several different areas that you can do some initial research on, so that you can draw up a shortlist and choose the most appropriate/doable. Good luck - I'd love to do some more research! :1b 2
AnonyMouse_22029 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 How about looking at the resources in the babyroom or a particular resource then it could be a how question. How can I use (a particular resource) to promote cog dev ? Or why some toys/resources provide my thinking in young children? You may get your ratio's into it too. Maz - can't agree about wanting to do more research. I like reading it, but no, I don't think would want to develop a study with methodology etc....

AnonyMouse_22029 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I completed my degree 3 years ago and yes I did love the reading the research. I did also like putting my studies together. I now support other staff and students as a mentor and yes do like giving them the advice on how to put the study together and the steps they need to ensure it is a valid study. Finleysmaid, if you haven't "done" the degree, it really is worth doing there is so much interesting research out there. Go for it!
AnonyMouse_30128 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Finleysmaid, if you haven't "done" the degree, it really is worth doing there is so much interesting research out there. Go for it! My issue with this is time! i have students doing degrees or foundation at the mo....so i can't do it at the same time as them because i can't be released from the setting. Have thought about open university but i'm not very self-motivated when it comes to study. also the other problem is pay...the pre-school can't pay me any more so why should i pay a student loan of £27,000 for no more pay! ( ah yes spot flaw in Mrs Truss's plan!) 1
AnonyMouse_8466 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 .the pre-school can't pay me any more so why should i pay a student loan of £27,000 for no more pay! ( ah yes spot flaw in Mrs Truss's plan!) Only about £12K, actually.
AnonyMouse_30128 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Only about £12K, actually. haha you're assuming i would come to you then!  1
AnonyMouse_8466 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 haha you're assuming i would come to you then!  I don't think our fees are out of the ordinary, locally?
AnonyMouse_29873 Posted April 18, 2014 Author Posted April 18, 2014 thanks for the ideas, tutor has come up with a suggestion but am resting on my laurels abit as its the first halfterm im actually NOT working ( ie just my own kids to look after ! ) re course and fees actually the government will pay off my loan to do uni course which is around 6k or there abouts unless on completeion I manage to get a job paying over £21k in which case I have to pay it back. So worth looking into. Ive also reduced down my working days to free up a day for me/study which I find is helping. thanks will let you know how I get on - though currently cant seem to up my grade above 57 % which is a drag - sigh. Happy Easter all ! x
