AnonyMouse_2821 Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 How do you cover knows that information can be retrieved from computers ...
AnonyMouse_13453 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 After drawing or doing the bob the builder build a dinosaur skeleton game, 'can I print that please'
AnonyMouse_3307 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I think this statement can be a bit ambiguous - is it about retrieving their own information they have stored or is it about knowing that I can find out about things using ICT by retrieving information about them? I'm still a bit jury's out on this one. If a child suggests looking on the internet to find out about cars they know you are using ICT to retrieve information, but equally if they go back to find a favourite game on cbeebies they are also retrieving information stored on the ICT. I suspect many children will do things like this on their family phones and ipads - our view of ICT is very behind the skills they are probably demonstrating elsewhere. I did read somewhere that the technology element of UTW needs revising to bring it up to date with the skills children now have!! Cx 3
AnonyMouse_19782 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Oh Catma I am so pleased with this view of the ICT element. Children are very savvy about this stuff and have been for so long. I do so wish they would up date this element.
AnonyMouse_30128 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 this issue with updating this element is of course that we all need to update our equipment...something that for most small settings may be a problem ...most schools are still using computers and mice in our area ...my children can't understand that if you touch the screen it doesn't work! I have to say i have always read this as using ict to 'find' information...or know that they can .(never thought about the other way round catma...interesting!) so in the garden children looking at ladybirds....a question comes up about what colours they come in...child says i know we can use the ipad to find out! or one of my little ones the other day playing on the computer (non working variety!) i asked what he was doing on it he said he was writing an email to his dad to tell him what he wanted for tea (this is a bit reversed but it shows that he knows the information would be contained in the email and that it could be sent without the person being there (abstract information)
AnonyMouse_19762 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Hmmm ........I've always taken it to mean that they can find out info.......
AnonyMouse_2821 Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 Thankyou my interpretation was to find out info but our childrens computers do not have internet or printer access.:-/
AnonyMouse_44476 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I've taken it as finding out info too but really interesting to find out others perspectives! we had a little girl lately playing with the ponies and another child asked something to which she said ' I don't know but we can easily google it on the ipad!!' I put this evidence in under that phrase. The one we struggle with is the remote control one, we have cars but they are fairly hopeless, anyone have any good suggestions for this? I can't remember the exact phrase!x
AnonyMouse_49131 Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 This reminds me of our Chinese New Year. At large group time I showed the children where China is on the map and showing them England too. We all got into our aeroplanes and flew to China. They learnt how Chinese people use chopsticks for eating. We pretended to to climb in the mountains and saw tigers and Giant Pandas. We celebrated the Chinese New Year with Dragon and ribbon dancing and learnt how to say Happy New Year in Chinese and I showed them how the Chinese people would write Hello. After flying back to England, I explained to the children that this morning I didn't know how long it takes to fly to China or how to to talk and write in Chinese. How did I find out about China? One boy said I had found out from a book another thought I had been there this morning but my favourite was " hmm because your clever teacher?" I do love my job and google!
