AnonyMouse_1012 Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Hi, I'm trying to think of more number songs to use with my class, particularly for adding one more but all I keep coming up with at the moment is One elephant went out to play. Can anyone make any more suggestions? Thanks Melc (This is how I felt today when making particularly messy playdough with the kids: load of food colouring and glitter: we had great fun - not sure others appreciate the benefits.)
Guest Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 When I was one I ate a bun The day I went to sea I jumped aboard a sailing ship And the sailor said to me "We're going this way that way Forwards and backwards, over th edeep blue sea. A bottle of rum to fill my tum And that's the life for me" When I was two I buckled my shoe... When I was three I hurt my knee... When I was four I fell on the floor... When I was five I learned to dive... Jumping Beans (with children as beans) One, two, three, four Beans came jumping through the door. Five, six, seven, eight, Jumping up on to my plate. Hickory dickory dock (the usual version) ... then... the clock struck 2 The mouse said "Boo!" the clock struck 3 The mouse said "Whee" the clock struck 4 The mouse said "No more" Hickory dickory dock

Three Christmas Trees (Tune: Five Currant Buns) Three Christmas trees in the garden shop Tall and green with a star on the top Along came a child with some money one day Bought a Christmas tree and took it right away Two Christmas trees in the garden shop Tall and green with a star on the top Along came a child with some money one day Bought a Christmas tree and took it right away One Christmas tree in the garden shop Tall and green with a star on the top Along came a child with some money one day Bought a Christmas tree and took it right away Five Little Evergreens Five little evergreens outside in a row. The first one said, "Let's look at the snow." The second one said, "Oh-oh, it's getting cold." The third one said, "Christmas is coming so I'm told." AnonyMouse_2846 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 thank you for the hickory dickory rhyme i love it
Guest Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 There was a long thread about number rhymes last year. If I've done the link right, you can find it here
Guest Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 I learnt this one from a colleague at a previous school 1 sticky lollipop stuck on a stick Add a sticky lollipop to lick, lick, lick 2 sticky .... e.t.c Lynda
Guest Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 1 little speckled frog, sat on a speckled log, Eating some most delicious bugs, yum, yum, He called to a friendly frog, to jump up onto the log, Then there were 2 green speckled frogs, glub, glub. Harricroft
AnonyMouse_4544 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 We were discussing this the other day in school and struggled to find many rhymes or songs for addition so this is great :-)
AnonyMouse_1012 Posted November 4, 2005 Author Posted November 4, 2005 Thanks for the link to the previous thread. There were lots more songs there too. What we like to do in my class is have the rhymes on laminated carsd then sometimes the children just randomly picka rhyme card for us to sing. I'm also developing a rhyme sack that has objects in that the children can pick out. They then think of a rhyme that the object reminds them of. Thank goodness it's lie in day tomorrow! Mel C

AnonyMouse_2732 Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 I couldn't agree more Chocolate girl and Marion! And of course, the EY Advisor wants us to feature more, so thanks from me, too!! Sue
Guest Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 could anyone tell me the words to 1 elephant went out to play. the children say bits of it but i dont know it all. thanks
Guest Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 Don't know the words to the elephant song, but here's some more... Five little men in a flying saucer flew down to earth one day They looked left and right but they didn't like the sight so 1 man flew away Four little men...... (and so on) Five little ducks went swimming one day over the pond and far away Mummy duck said quack quack quack but only four little ducks came back Four little ducks.... (and so on) And this one is said, not sung...... "If you're one, one, one put up your thumb, thumb, thumb If you're two, two, two touch your shoe, shoe, shoe If you're three, three, three tap your knee, knee, knee If you're four, four, four stamp the floor, floor, floor If you're five, five, five do the jive, jive, jive" Carolyn
AnonyMouse_4177 Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 When I was having my bath one day Five toy ducks came in to play Up and down they swam about Then I got cross and threw one out All the way down to 'no toy ducks came in to play I was sad and asked for more 'No' said Daddy, 'They stay on the floor' Re elephants: we say 1 elephant went out to play Upon a piece of string one day He thought it such a clever stunt He called for another elephant etc etc till you've had enough, then, 7 elephants went out to play Upon a piece of string one day When all of a sudden the string it broke And down fell all the elephant folk I know there are other versions which possibly are better grammar! barb
Guest Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 Barb, have you tried using masking tape on the floor for your elephant song? We stuck a very basic spider web on our carpet with masking tape and then did the song. It took a lot of gross motor skills to wobble along the web and the 'whole body' thing really added so much to the rhyme that the children were already very familiar with. You could extend it further with children trying to identify number cards/cards with symbols on before they get their turn.... what about if the laminated numbers were cut in 2 and they had to match them together.... hmmm... 2nd thoughts it would take too long but you've got me thinking....dangerous!
AnonyMouse_4177 Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 Lisa, excellent idea, thank you. This site is sooooo inspiring (on a good day, on a bad day it makes me feel v inadaquate! Barb
AnonyMouse_2776 Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 You can find some good ones here: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Nurseryrhymes.html
AnonyMouse_3735 Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 (edited) Alternative words to the elephant song: One elephant went out to play, Upon a spider's web one day, they thought it such tremendous fun, That he called for another elephant to come. Two elephants ..... etc. You can go up as far as you like, then when you have got to the desired number Then I have come accross several endings (depending on where i have been living!) we sing ten elephants went out to play, Upon a spider's web one day, they thought it such tremendous fun, but the spiders web broke and they all fell down (all fall over onto floor) or they called for all the other elephants to come (all children pretend to be elephants...can be noisy!)
