Do you ever worry...?

Recommended Posts

There could be a bit like the old Ready, Steady, Cook where we brought in a mystery bag of useful stuff and an expert (3, 4, 5 year old) had 30 minutes to make a creation from it!

I was thinking more 'Great British Bake Off' type of thing, where the panel of folk vote someone off every week. Who wants to be on the panel with me - could we get Mel and Sue do you reckon?

In January I decided to make an igloo from milk cartons. Had hundreds donated(some unwashed). My perfectionist husband started to build it millimetre perfect, got up to the third level and went in the next day and the adhesive had not worked!! So I stacked them all away in the sheds and in chests and promptly tried to forget about them. So the other day saw me with my car stacked FULL of to the recycling centre where I stood for twenty minutes putting them in the bin. We also put out two huge crate fulls for two weeks running for our recycling collection!! I never want to see another milk carton in my life.

Thank you - I have seen those before and thought they looked cool!

So is the challenge to make something from the 'stuff'? The signature bake could be based around a different item each week e.g. Week 1 egg boxes, Week 2 Pringles tubes etc. The technical challenge could be along the lines of 'Construct a world monument' or maybe your own version of a famous Blue Peter 'make'. As for the show stopper... Would we be allowed glitter? Are any resources banned?

Loving this idea - not sure if I want to be on the panel or to enter!

Am sure Mel and Sue would be up for it although Sue putting her elbow in your creation may be even more disastrous than in the Bake Off.

(I am quite seriously thinking of running this as an idea for a challenge for Children in Need Day or even just an off timetable, cross curricular, enrichment day thingy!)

dont bring the pringle tubes near me! i once drove the whole of my staff team potty creating miniature nativity scenes with the children (very fluffy duck). they had openings in the side with handles to carry and each of the little characters were held in the middle!!! (dont DO IT...DON;T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT...IT WILL DRIVE YOU BONKERS!)

Sounds like a show stopper to me FM! I am struggling to visualise it - you don't happen to have a picture do you?!

no i think i tried to hide it! all my fluffy duck items were skipped when we moved......other debacles included xmas wreaths made from rice and pva ...took forever to dry and balloon pigs made with papier mache ...probably best not to talk about them!

We are regularly donated large brie boxes...have just had another delivery.....will have to have a think about what to do with those this term (did marble painting in them last term as they have a small edge to them.

They look pretty funky :-) . Reminds me of a garden shed I saw built out of old video cassettes - the roof was tiled with the boxes!

We're really running with this now!

Definitely glitter for the showstopper!

When you glue something and it 'slides' before the glue has set?

You would definitely have to factor in PVA drying time to your creations.

Cait, do you have piercing blue eyes and a stern expression. Can you look sceptically at something I've made and say "Well it's not how I would have done it but we'll see..." Then when my creation suffers from wobble or slide or imperfect angles explain to everyone just why your way is so much better?! ;-)

Would we use pva, double sided sticky tape or masking tape? Hmm. The double-sided could be seen to be a bit 'microwave' I suppose. That's the first banned thing then.

The standard could be that you should be able to put it in a carrier bag and put it in the car, drive around the block, get it all out again and then it has the final test viewing.

Well, I think choice of joining agent is a key element in the design but I agree about banning double sided tape - would avoid the last minute 'it's got a dip in the top so I'll use more icing and dust with icing sugar' moments. Besides - I rarely have the nails to cope with double sided tape!

I like the standard Cait - maybe an extra test for the final could be the presence of a dog or rumbunctious toddler in the car too? I think key judge phrases could include "robust", "it has a certain 'je ne sais quoi'" and "there's a distinct earthy quality" Any others?

I've been pondering the on set decor (this is so much more fun than doing my planning!) and I'm not sure the 'Bake Off bunting' look will translate' What do the rest of you think?

It would have to be home made bunting, from cut up magazines and wrapping paper with buttons and things stuck on, but I think we need to have nursery sized tables and chairs so that the judges can really look down on us as they patrol

xDxD I had been thinking about table height! In which case I'm going to take to wearing skateboarders knee pads as I invariably end up kneeling on the floor with little tables.

Maybe an old-fashioned apothecary chest in the background with each drawer filled with a different decorative resource (i.e. different colours of glitter, sequins etc.)?

Hot glue guns? ;)

I do think giving them a carrier bag would ensure a fair test situation. It could be one of those crumpled, flimsy one that are on the point of disintegrating into small pieces (before you ask I do fold my carriers!)

I've never quite understood the blow torching a meringue thing either and besides the noise they make is a little scary. Glue guns are quiet though.

On a (very loosely) related note I'm baking my first cake in my new oven and have just discovered there's a light inside and I can see through the door! I've never had a see-through door before! I can watch cake grow! I am finding it very hard to resist sitting on the kitchen floor and staring! It's a lemon syrup loaf cake in case anyone's interested.
