Guest Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Hi, I still make my playdough with Cream of Tartar using the microwave method but I am now struggling to buy C of T. Has anyone now got the same problem? Instead of buying it in a small tub I can only buy it in 6 little sachets of 1 teaspoon in each sold by Dr Oetker at roughly £1. It`s going to get very expensive at £1 for 6 teaspoons. I have looked in Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisons, Booths and Lidl. Not tried Asda or Aldi.
AnonyMouse_1469 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Ebay, unless you have a wholesaler like Bookers handy x
AnonyMouse_6721 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Yes its been like that for a while. I was think of contacting TTS to see if they would stock larger amounts. They do stock big bags of cornflour and big bottle of food colouring. 1
AnonyMouse_14766 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I had the same problem and the only place I can get a tub of it is in our local Waitrose. It is still a lot cheaper than those silly little sachets, just over £1 for 140g.
AnonyMouse_41997 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 We can still buy the tubs in our local petrol stations spar and centra
AnonyMouse_11396 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Think Makro sell it in large tubs.
AnonyMouse_42853 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Marks and Spencers sell the pots, £1.05 I think
AnonyMouse_13457 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Tesco was selling it in tubs - only bigger stores though! korkycat
AnonyMouse_44055 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 We can't get it from our school kitchen suppliers anymore. I do know you can substitute lemon juice or vinegar (two tables spoons of lemon or vinegar for each one tablespoon of C of T) but you need to add a little extra flour to counteract the extra liquid. Doing it with vinegar smells foul though so I suggest lemon juice! Mel x
Guest Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I haven't used traditional playdough for some time now - mainly because of the salt content which is not good for those with excema (sp?) or who have cuts on their hands. I always use bread mix - you can either buy the packet mix (500g for about 90p) or just buy plain flour and add dried yeast (or fresh if you prefer). I usually keep the dough for a couple of days - but this week it lasted for 5 days! When the children finish playing with it, put it in the fridge. You can still add colour if you wish, or rice etc to give texture. It smells lovely and the children love it. There are many other types of dough e.g. cloud dough which uses cornflour and hair conditioner - just do a search!
AnonyMouse_2157 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Same here - having trouble getting it too. I did complain to Sainsburys about those stupid and expensive sachets and for a while they got back the tubs but I think they have gone back to the sachets... I wonder what is happening in the world to affect the supply of cream of tartar? <_<
AnonyMouse_8282 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I complained in tesco's. I could get it my local small branch (old market town) yet not in the massive one a tad further away.I I was told 'you have to look at your client/customer base- in my market town; lots of older WI types this= lots of old school home baking. In the other store, big new housing complexe, mainly working families = fast, quite convenient baking, or more often none at all. That said, I get it in Bookers now anyway as its in a bigger tub. Xxx
Guest Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I got a lovely big top by going on line. I just googled cream of tarter and the supplier appeard
AnonyMouse_30128 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 just bought 1kg tub on amazon (£15) should keep us going for a while...i think asking tts is a fab idea!
AnonyMouse_26037 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 In the Cosy catalogue you can get 6 jars (equivalent to 700g) for £7.99.

Xxx I buy mine in Bookers too. I wonder if this Tesco thing explains why to get my car cleaned by Tescos in my town it costs £6, but where my mum lives in Essex it only costs £5!

AnonyMouse_5013 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) I have bought it in Tescos but I also found it in home bargains and stocked up with it. Edited October 2, 2014 by Aunt Sally
