AnonyMouse_29664 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Hi, Can anyone out there help - I have a number of 2 year olds in my setting with EAL and I desperately need some ideas for books to use with these children. What I need is ones with very very simple story lines that I can use with puppets or other visual aids - does anyone have any favourites that work well? Also does anyone have any tools for language support / development they can reccommend for children with EAL. We are using signs, symbols and visual timetables but would welcome any other suggestions. Thanks
AnonyMouse_30128 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 we did a lot of work with dear zoo last year (easy to sign) also it's not a box and it's not a stick....(good for developing imagination) and busters present (think that's right!) and mouse paint (colour recognition) also sign versions of baa baa black sheep / twinkle twinkle/ incy wincy and humpty dumpty...tend to repeat over a few days rather than moving on too quickly using other props to keep interest. The most valuable tool i find is music...singing things like head shoulders knees and toes will teach them parts of the body quicker than any other teaching method ...there is a list somewhere for developing English through song i'll try and find it

Guest Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 We use books with lots of repetitive phrases - 'Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?', 'A Train Ride', - to build up the rhythm of spoken English. Also use loads of songs - eg, one finger, one thumb to introduce a short sequence, five in the bed (rather than ten to start with) for number and silly action rhymes like 'jelly on a plate' to introduce ways of moving.
