AnonyMouse_45622 Posted September 15, 2014 Share Posted September 15, 2014 Hiya, The children are currently on their second week of half days but when we go full time we plan to have 2 maths sessions per week which focus on the same objective (if necessary). Those sessions will be a carpet session with the whole class and then independent activities relating to the objective whilst the CT or TA works with a focus group. Guest Posted September 15, 2014 Share Posted September 15, 2014 As above except that we have four maths sessions a week (not on PE days!). A whole class session following the recap, teach, practise/apply, plenary format as for phonics - we do the recap and teach as a whole class followed by focus groups working on the objective at differentiated levels. Each group activity is brief - 10 mins max. We organise the curriculum in blocks, so we'll spend a while looking at counting, one-to-one matching etc, then a block of an aspect of SSM. We have found that this works better than mixing the strands up. Having said that our maths is still the poor relation of literacy in terms of allocated adult time and attainment reflects that -work in progress to redress the balance. The children will then have a guided activity to do as well as an independent one to do. However due to our free-flow system it can sometimes take two weeks to get through a guided group (although independent ones are changed weekly. The children love it, when they are confident we then move on to paper and crayons important to do with both hands. Then the actually write the digits. Take a look for it on Google.
