AnonyMouse_4562 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Hi, As always, I have a small number of children who love playing on the trikes and scooters and spend the majority of their time doing this. I have 2 boys in particular who like to push each other around on the go-kart. Some of the times this play is true imaginative play and they are beginning to introduce storylines - in this case it is easier to support and extend their learning towards their ideas and interests. However, sometimes it's harder to extend simply pushing each other around the track. These children have shown other interests which I have provided for but are just desperate to get out to the trikes every morning despite anything else I provide. They will choose other activities after a while but will often go back to the trikes again. Apart from having no trike days, any suggestions. Of course, I want to work with the children's interests and preferences as much as possible but am also aware of low level play becoming a problem, Thanks Green Hippo x
AnonyMouse_30128 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 How about removing a wheel ...could they be persuaded to create a garage?? obstacle courses/ chalk roads/shopping village (with different shops) missions to go on? (find something blue/green etc ) car wash/ We've removed ours for tomorrow so that we can have a football pitch!!!
Guest Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 We found that having the cars and bikes out every day meant that they were all many of the children played with. Why not put them away for a couple of days and see what they do?
AnonyMouse_5970 Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 We don't have them at all because the problems they used to cause outweighed the benefits. We have loads of other things to do outside, or course, and lots of ways for children to develop gross motor skills and co-ordination...and have fun!
AnonyMouse_2157 Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) could they 'pimp' their ride? e.g. get them decorating it in someway - following on from the garage idea you could introduce the concept of a 'body shop' - a way to get them into creativity perhaps? You may even want to consider a trikes/scooters day at your setting - a 'bling your bike to nursery day' where all the children could be invited to bring a decorated trike/bike etc or some other wheeled object such as a pushchair. Either pre decorated or to be decorated at your setting? Edited October 1, 2014 by apple
Guest Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) * You could have an obstacle course, so that they have to show more control in their use of the trikes. Use a sand timer - how long does it take to get around the obstacle course - can they beat the 'record'? * They could have various 'maps' with different routes to take. Roads, houses, post boxes etc could be drawn onto the ground with chalk. * Draw/paint houses on individual card and place around the area. They could be given a 'road map' and instructed to find e.g. house number 4 or a series of instructions - take this letter and post it in house no 2 then take this letter to ... ... . * Ride to the 'shop' and buy an apple and a cake - can they remember what they had to buy? Use coins and have a shop assistant. * Place lots of road signs around the 'trike' area and give the children a tick sheet and clipboard - can they find the signs on their sheet and tick them when they have found them - what do they think the signs mean? Failing that - take away the trikes or greatly reduce the amount (to 2 or 3) so that they have to share and take turns - use a timer! While they are waiting for their turn, give them a task - find 3/5/10 stones/daisies etc. then it will be YOUR turn. Good luck! Edited October 1, 2014 by Guest
AnonyMouse_39602 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Now that we have access directly to the garden , trike and car time has been limited in the yard as the children have bern so engaged in other things, saying that I often found some staff saw it as an easy option and never extended play unless I took the lead ( ok so that is my job ) today we went out limited trikes , so lots of turn taking ( next steps for many ) we added sticky kids music outside and had obstacle course whilst the others and I created a water wall , everyone happy and engaged We were fortunate to have the Tour de France through our village and we had enormous fun using real tools to dismantle bikes, weave wheels , wheel painting etc Why not use different colour mats for traffic lights , good listening and attention and any of the other fab suggestions on here
