help with a poem

i know it won't take long for someone to reply but i am looking for the poem about a child telling what he had done that day even though the parent thought he hadn't done anything as he hadn't brought out a picture etc., - just fed up because each day a mum says what have you been doing today - you havent got any paintings or ANYTHING!!

thought i could print out and stick on the door - hopefully she will see it lol

WhatDidYouDoAtSchoolToday?

Nothing.

Nothing?

Well, nothing much.

You did nothing much all day long?

Well . . . alright Mum, if you really want to know,
I had 4 lessons
and 45 minutes of playtime
in which I went around with 3 friends.
For lunch I had 22 baked beans,
2 ½ fishfingers, a 1/4 of a bread roll
and 1 banana.
I fed Nibbles, the class hamster,
2 sunflower seeds.
I wrote 1 poem.
I got 7/10 for a spelling test.
I did 16 fairly tricky maths questions.
And.I learnt 5 very interesting things
about the Ancient Egyptians, including
how they used to remove the brains
of their dead with a hook - MUM.
DO YOU EVER LISTEN TO A WORD I SAY?

Oh sorry darling, what was that?

I said I removed my teacher's brain today!

What? Oh well done, you!
What would you like for tea?

Childs Play

Oh, what a busy morning! I've been playing with the dough

And with a little help, upon a card I learned to sew.

I helped my friend Nurse Sarah' to perform an operation

Then fixed a track together for my train and built a station.

I popped inside the wendy house to make a cup of tea

And stood beside the cooker making lunch for twenty-three!

I completed two whole jigsaws and played a new board game

And had a turn on all the bikes, the slide and climbing frame.

I handed round the biscuits at "milk and biscuit" time

Then listended to the story and sang a nursery rhyme.

But now the morning's over and the mums are all waiting

I hope my mother doesn't say

"I WISH YOU'D DONE A PAINTING!"

Just Playing

 

When I am building in the block room,

 

Please dont say Im Just Playing.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play,

 

About balance and shapes.

 

Who knows, I may be an an architect someday.

 

When I am getting all dressed up,

 

Setting the table, caring for the babies,

 

Dont get the idea Im Just Playing.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

Im expressing myself and being creative.

 

I may be an artist or an inventor someday.

 

When you see me sitting in a chair

 

Reading to an imaginary audience,

 

Please dont laugh and think Im Just Playing.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

I may be a teacher someday.

 

When you see me combing the bushes for bugs,

 

Or packing my pockets with choice things I find,

 

Dont pass it off as Just Play.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

I may be a scientist someday.

 

When you see me engrossed in a puzzle or some

 

plaything at my school,

 

Please dont feel that time is wasted in Play.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

Im learning to solve problems and concentrate.

 

I may be in business some day.

 

When you see me cooking or tasting foods,

 

Please dont think that because I enjoy it, it is Just Play.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

Im learning to follow directions and see differences.

 

I may be a cook someday.

 

When you see me learning to skip, hop, run, and move my body,

 

Please dont say Im Just Playing.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

Im learning how my body works.

 

I may be a doctor, nurse, or athlete someday.

 

When you ask me what Ive done at school today,

 

And I say, I Just played.

 

Please dont misunderstand me.

 

For, you see, Im learning as I play.

 

Im learning to enjoy and be successful at my work,

 

Im preparing for tomorrow.

 

Today, I am a child and my work is play.

Or this : The Value of Play

You say that you love your children,

And are concerned that they learn today,

As am I, that's why I'm providing

A variety of kinds of play.

You are asking what's the value

Of having your children play?

Your daughter's creating a tower,

She may be a builder someday.

 

You're asking me the value

Of blocks and sand and clay.

Your children are solving problems,

They will use that skill every day.

 

You're saying that you don't want your son

To play in that sissy way.

He's learning to cuddle a doll,

He may be a father someday.

 

You're questioning the interest tables

They just look like useless play.

Your children are making choices,

They'll be on their own someday.

 

You're worried your children aren't learning

And later they'll have to pay.

They're learning a pattern for learning,

For they'll be learners always.

What Did You Do Today?


When children come home at the end of the day,

The question they're asked as they scurry to play

is, "Tell me what you did today?"

And the answer they give makes you sigh with dismay.

"Nothing, I did nothing today!"

Perhaps nothing means that I played with blocks,

Or counted to ten, or sorted some rocks.

Maybe I painted a picture of red and blue

Or heard a story of a mouse that flew.

Maybe I watched to gerbils eat today,

Or went outside on the swings to play.

Maybe today was the very first time

That my scissors followed a very straight line.

Maybe I lead a song from beginning to end,

Or played with a special brand new friend.

When you're in preschool and your heart has wings,

"Nothing" can mean so many things!!





There's Nothing in My Bag Today


Today I did my math and science,

I toasted bread.

I halved and quartered.

I counted, measured, used my eyes and ears and head.

I added and subtracted on the way,

I used a magnet, blocks and memory tray.

I learned about a rainbow and how to weigh.

So please don't say, "Anything in your bag today?'

You see I'm sharing as I play.

I learned to listen and speak clearly when I talk,

To wait my turn, and when inside to walk.

To put my thoughts into a phrase,

To guide a crayon through a maze.

To find my name and write it down,

To do it with a smile and not a frown.

To put my pasting brush away,

So please don't say, "What, nothing in your bag today?"

I've learned about a snail and a worm,

Remembering how to take my turn.

Helped a friend when he was stuck,

Learned that water runs off a duck.

I looked at words from left to right,

Agreed to differ, not to fight.

So please don't say,

"Did you only play today?"

I've not seen any of these before - thank you all for sharing.

Reading some of these so reminds me of when my son was young.. with pockets full of stones and rocks, always picking them up and playing with them..

he now works as a Geologist..

There really is something in play and how it could develop future interests.

This reminds me of my 'little' brother (now 33!) who loved lego when he was little - he made the most amazing constructions from it. He used to say he wanted to be a part-time lego designer when he grew up. When asked 'why part-time?' he'd say "so I can play with it the rest of the time!" What's he doing now? He's a civil engineer specialising in bridges!

I would love to know how many of the dinosaur obsessed children really do grow up to be paleontologists!
