Crikey! That's a big change!

There is a Polish community in the nearby town, and I did posters in Polish to go up there a few years ago. The preschool doesn't as yet have any 'off-comers' (as they are called locally) from Poland, although they have one with a Polish surname whose father doesn't have access for one reason or another.

Crikey! That's a big change!

It has been very noticeable - I also have a Polish member of staff (taken on this year and herself married to a South African) - not because we have Polish children I hasten to add but she was the best candidate for the job so even the staff team is becoming more diverse (although we are still an all female staff team - but that is another issue altogether!) On the other side of town we have a very large Portuguese community but so far none have ventured our way. Many years ago a significant number of "Vietnamese boat people" (remember that) were temporarily billeted and subsequently settled in this area hence the influx of Vietnamese children and now grandchildren attending settings. Oh and I forgot we have also children with Dutch and South African heritage - all this within the last three to four years!! Truly we are become a global society :1b

ZigZag you did not offend but highlighted an aspect of inclusion that is so often misinterpreted and 'some' practitioners even now feel comfortable in just having a few mixed ethnicity dolls, some pics and a few festivals through the year.... and for Ofsted to think this is okay, shows we have a long way to go in regards to inclusion, accessibility and participation for all and not just at early years level but beyond....
