Combining different media to create new effects.

I'm having a mental blank about what "Understands that different media can be combined to create new effects" (DM 40-60 months) might look like. I can't think of any examples that I can use either to look for children doing it or to give them opportunities to do it.

This makes me suspect I haven't given them any and I'd really like to!

Can anyone help?

we look at it as any thing in one form that can be combined with something else to make another form ....flour/water, shredded paper/water, playdough/glitter etc...but let them mix it rather than you present it already mixed :)

How would you differentiate between 30-50m and 40-60+m when the 3 yr olds, who have just started nursery, will be doing exactly the same as the 4 yr olds?

[...] making play dough cup cakes, then looking for beads, gems, or coloured matchsticks etc. to decorate

For me it was when a child did a painting, and then went to add pieces to it to collage and then possibly used crayons to add more detail

Would these be a combination of media and does it create a new effect, other than look different?

ummm now i'm questioning what i thought i understood lol

found this: - How children experiment to create new effects ? example: by drizzling glue over wool, or squirting pools of colour on paper.

i'm not sure how you mean....though the statement is 40-60+ the 30-50+ children could still play with it, and the 2 yr olds ...though they'd probably just bash the flour with their hands until they were covered in it and there was none left to mix with anything :/

I agree with Cait. We look for children to use different media together - like painting and then adding other materials. In terms of differentiation Devonmaid, a child working below 40-60+ months may experiment with different media with general comments. However, for a child to be working at the 40-60+ I would want to hear them speak about the effect that they are creating. E.g."I'm putting cotton wool on because they look like clouds." At different effect is about the appearance of the piece and combining can mean mixing or just joining. It may mean adding sand to the paint if the children are allowed to do this themselves but for the 40-60 months it would be more than just experimenting with this, there would be a reason for using this combination.

But...I might be wrong!

I think you're over thinking non statutory guidance!!! Developmentally children will start to combine different media to create something new, it could be music and dance don't forget, it's not just arts and crafts materials either!!

Yes - that's what I was getting at! Language and thinking creatively.

You're right Wildflowers but the young children we have need to begin somewhere in making changes I did say 'on a simple level' they may think to themselves I did that, I wonder if.....

I just had my mind set on Froglet's search for examples for this statement for this age group...
