Showing progress in journals

Recommended Posts

Observations in themselves will contribute to the summative assessment which you may make periodically - that's where you would be demonstrating progress really, so over a period of time a child may be emerging into a skill set and begin to be securing those skills. However you should also be able to see a progression in skills etc if you are collecting observations which show how the child is demonstrating them. So for writing skills I would keep samples from when a child starts to show new skills developmentally, so goes from scribble to sticks and circles for example.

I must admit, it's something I've discussed with our lead practitioner this last week as I feel our tracking system doesn't show progress that well.

I suggested us going to a system to highlighting statements from DM to inform our emerging/developing/secure decisions as some of our children can stay developing in one age band for a good 6-8 months and their progress looks like they haven't moved on, when in actual fact they've just covered more ground in that age band.
