AnonyMouse_42829 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Is anyone else just feeling completely overwhelmed with paperwork? I feel like I have totally lost all direction with what paperwork is really required and just running round in circles. In particular I need to do some work with my team on evidencing children's progress. Why can't there just be some more guidance on how we are expected to do things instead of this guessing game all the time. Ideally I'd like to have a guidance sheet to give to my staff to outline what is expected to be contained in each child's learning journey and how often as a minimum they should be making assessments etc. if anyone has any tips it would be most welcome at the moment! Sorry for the vent but if anyone is going to understand it will be you lovely lot!

I have attached the good one showing the kind of paperwork we should be aspiring too?! There is also another sheet we were given with guidance on the LJ giving a timescale of when to do obs, assessments etc. May help, may not? We have a mobile wireless network (form 3) and have had 2 on tablets, one on a phone and another on a laptop all managing it. Still cant get anything to work outside for us though.

But a thought has just occurred, can you work on it without going onto internet in your setting and then when you are at home with your own internet server download, upload or whatever. So staff took photos on the hudls ( had one each) then bought home and uploaded pics under individual staff pins so came under them and they then able to access through their home computers to annotate etc. Hope that helps.

There seems to be no explanation of how they come to the conclusion as to whether the child's level is below, inline or above expectation.Im guessing they assume that there is some sore of linear progression. I can't help but feel this is trying to make a "science" out of an "art". Progression is not equal or linear, the development matters statements are utterly subjective and not objective, and above all else, the statements were only ever intended to be a guide, not a rigid model. I must also add that I do not think these are very user friendly for parents at all! I'll now duck and wait to be shot down..... Edited February 26, 2015 by eyfs1966

I think if you ask most parents, they are quite happy with just a few photos with little comments, of their time spent with us. They do not want to spend time reading through pages of long observations/assessments etc. When they get to school does all this work continue-I think not? They have given me a great base to start implementing some changes. Thank you to those of you suggesting tapestry. I would love to be using this but financially this is pretty impossible for us at the moment! Definitely something I would like to work towards though. As a small charity run preschool our budget is tight for things like this. Can I ask how other settings manage this? Also, would we need to buy tablets for staff to use as we only currently have 2 laptops so I wouldn't want staff to be hanging around waiting to use a laptop during keyworker time. Thanks Tinkerbell
AnonyMouse_13453 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Hi. Tablets can be bought quite cheaply. I got a couple for preschool from ebay, they were iDream ones and came from China. They were about £40 each and also had the capability of holding dual SIM cards too! They were very good and not bulky. Staff enjoyed using them and got quite quick at navigating about. They are android devices and had cameras too!

AnonyMouse_48226 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I don't know if I can mention another online provider on here (sorry) but I am using Orbit and am finding it fabulous. It is free to use and the minimum you need is an Ipod. We have two Ipod's (from Student Computers so quite cheap) and you can do the majority of what Orbit can offer on there. For some of the bigger things like Learning Journeys and assessments you need access to a computer but we pay staff for an hour a week at home to get them done on their computers which is then printed out at work. It does take a bit of getting used to and their forum is probably not as good as Tapestry but their is a Facebook page called The on-line learning journal group who are fantastic with their advice. We have found it has cut down on writing paperwork but still needs a bit of time to get typed up.
