Guest
Does anyone do yoga with their children? I am wondering whether to give it a try for our topic 'Healthy Me!' Can anyone suggest a good DVD aimed at pre-school children?
AnonyMouse_13453
Ours thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a weekly session with Tatty Bumpkin, learning all sorts of stretches and poses etc.

Guest
I have done a little research - it looks good. How much does it cost, Cait?
AnonyMouse_13453
I honestly can't remember, and it was about four years ago anyway. We could set how many times she came in the term, so it was easy to budget. We had her on Friday afternoon, and it released staff to do paperwork of whatever if they needed to. There's a few things on YouTube that will give you some idea.
AnonyMouse_39602
Do you have a local yoga teacher who may be able to come in and do a session ?
AnonyMouse_3735
this is an Auzzie site but has some pictures and poses you may find useful. There are some free resources on the site . http://www.kidsyogastories.com/kids-yoga-poses/ I found it because they advocate yoga for managing emotions, using a focus on using movement to invite calm http://childhood101.com/2015/04/yoga-for-kids/ and do check locally for a yoga instructor who may be willing to give some time free... or for a minimum payment.. we had a weekly gym instructor come in for free , she came for years and taught us a lot too, so when she changed jobs we could take over the weekly sessions.. or in fact by then we were doing them 3 times a week. AnonyMouse_43806
We pay for fortnightly Yoga sessions led by a teacher who is trained in children's yoga ( originally was Yogabugs). Cost is £45 for an hour ( 12 children in the group) but it is something we couldn't do ourselves. Parents like it and they make a financial contribution to cover costs ( well some of them do). A member of staff always sits in on the session. Yoga is more specialised than some people realise and I'm not sure it is something you could deliver safely and effectively with no training. Not sure we will carry on next year though since belts have to be tightened!
AnonyMouse_14766
Thanks a lot for these. I've been thinking about taking up yoga myself and this looks like great fun to do with our pre-school children so I've printed the poses off ready to start back next week.
AnonyMouse_2157
Yes we do Yoga. I use the book Yoga Pretzals and you can also buy the card pack to go with it (you can get these on Amazon). We use three cards a week to teach new poses. I am not trained and although I agree there are particular skills that Yoga specialists have, for us we have made it really simple. We start each session with reviewing the last three moves and then introduce the new ones. We practice these a few times over, working on a tricky bits if there are some, and then finish with a meditation from 'Relax Kids'. I posted the pictures from the cards onto the children's Tapestry and have some great responses from parents doing the Yoga positions at home. I also have produce large posters of the moves and put these around the Nursery so that children can continue to practice in their free flow time. The infants do Yogabugs as this has been paid for with the sports premium but alas we did not have the money. I have found it really beneficial and the children have enjoyed it immensely. After we have completed all the cards it will be the end of the session as I do not have the skill set to move it on but it has been really good for a half-terms physical development. Guest
It's not Yoga but we do 'Wake up Shake up'. The kids enjoy it. You can buy the DVDs online think about £25. DVDs show you how to do routines and have some good (in my opinion) music to dance to. We play the DVD & join in with the woman on screen like a fitness DVD for the first 5 mins of the session while everyone is arriving.

Yes we have done 'Wake up and Shake up' with our Yr 6 children - they led the session during their morning break at school. It was excellent, I will talk to the class teacher and see if she can arrange to do it again. Would still like to try Yoga, though. I have emailed Tatty Bumpkin twice, but no response - very disappointed.
Guest
We have our first taster yoga session tomorrow with Tatty Bumpkin - I am really excited! Thanks for the suggestion, Cait. x
AnonyMouse_13453
Awww, you'll love it and so will the little ones, learning to be Bendy, Giggly, Clever and Strong! You should get cards that tie it all in with EYFS and give parents info on how to promote it at home too. Come back and tell us about your adventure! I will be using it next year in nursery too .Hope it helps Thank you for that - will have a look! Our Tatty Bumpkin session was really good - we all loved it, children and staff. But it is very expensive - £45 per 45 min session which will soon add up if done on a regular basis ; I really don't think I can justify spending this money from my budget. The discount given when booking regular sessions is minimal and still makes it unaffordable. We could possibly find a yoga instructor at a more 'reasonable' price, but I really loved the idea of the 'Tatty Bumpkin' doll and stories. Wish I had more money!! AnonyMouse_13453
Yes, the cost was the main driving factor for us. We had her fortnightly, which meant just a few times each half term. I guess you could market it to attract more children for that session as long as you don't go over your number/space etc allowance
Guest
I can thoroughly recommend Cosmic Kids - it is brilliant, maybe a little too fast in pace, but the children have loved it and it is FREE! Look on Youtube.
