AnonyMouse_4562 Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Hi, First post of the new school term! Just evaluating daily rhymes and storytime. For the last 2-3 years we have had a daily story from our core book bag (based on children's favourite plus a few other key books) and try to do the rhyme of the week and the number rhyme of the week. I have a box with lolly sticks with little pictures for rhymes on the end and number rhymes resources which the children use while we are singing. We do a rhyme session one morning and another number rhyme session another morning (5 mins). I try to stick to a collection of rhymes in order for the children to learn them well, sometimes using new ones that fit in with children's interests. We also have a story sack available in the book area which the children will have been introduced to. I keep these quite simple with mostly easily replaceable items as I get too upset when things go missing! How does this all sound? Does anyone do anything different? What we do does seem to work as long as timings have worked that day! Just trying not to get stuck in my ways and keeping open to other ideas. Green Hippo x 1
AnonyMouse_19782 Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Sounds lovely to me Green hippo - we don't actually do "anything of the week" any longer, but I have been looking at ways of introducing something similar again . I agree too distressing when items go missing - think the staff feel I can be a little over zealous in that dept. sometimes. But these things sometimes take ages to source or can be quite unique and I hate to lose them. 3

Have to say we do not plan rhyme/story times often...as we use what's happened during the session as a clue...so if we're doing pirates we do pirate songs and books....dinosaurs .....families etc etc etc 1

I was informed on training for music and the effect on development this had that by a child starts school a guide is that if a child knows 8 rhymes off by heart then they will develop better (there is some research about it but don't ask as that bits not stuck in my head lol) We do song time and mix it up with like you core songs which we have Velcro selection or props so say 5 children stand up with buns etc also have 'pass the bag' where we sing as it goes round then we all close our eyes and the child 'try's' to describe the item in 3 words before we guess the song which links to letters and sounds. I also make up rhymes based on daily interests which is fun as we all tend to end up in laughter as my songs don't make much sense but they rhyme as we have core songs we don't have a song of the week for pre schoolers but we have book of week for 2's x

I do have a ready-made set of rhymes, however, at the beginning of the year, I decide which are going to be our core rhymes based on what I think the children need. I have quite a few less-common ones so there's always ones they don't know. We do the same with key books - we ask the parents to tell us their child's favourite book(s) and we try to incorporate as many as these as we can plus a few others that we feel are appropriate for this cohort. This gives us a good range of books, and I have never yet had a child who already knows them all. The reason I incorporate story and rhyme-time everyday is due to the recommendation that the children should know a number stories and rhymes off by heart to support learning in phonics, recalling stories and creating new stories, enjoyment of knowing and being able to join in with a story etc etc. I can't remember all the benefits!! We incorporate any extra rhymes or stories that are particular relevant to what we have been doing. The children often bring in related books. We are very flexible with how we approach anything which is 'daily' but as we know children LOVE ROUTINE and often remind me that we need to do the story/rhyme/number rhyme. The best bit is seeing the children using the resources independently to sing the songs together (often pretending to be me! ) Green Hippo x 4

Guest Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I try and make sure we have at least a story or a singing time in our day. I'm working with 18-30 months children and it's so important for their language development.

AnonyMouse_11396 Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I am known for breaking out in song and rhyme anytime of the day, not just at a set time. To truly embed this I feel it's important to feel confident to do this whether playing in the great outdoors, discovering mathematics, sharing a book or in role play. Our children love to sing and dance so we might often have a cd on with accompanying instruments to explore too. Make it fun and let the children lead the way. 3

My song basket ATM has got: 5 little ducks, humpy dumpty, Incy Wincy Spider, Wind The Bobbin Up and Leo The Lion.
AnonyMouse_11396 Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Ok we have the solid wine bottle thingies that we put Velcro down the sides, children choose a song ( generally traditional rhymes/ songs) and then pop in the box. We have favourites such as down in the meadow, five little firemen, when all the cows are sleeping, twinkle twinkle, wheels on the bus. We also have ones with Christmas songs. Then we also have out a folder with lots of songs with pictures in. The internet has a vast wealth of songs and poems to also freshen it up and share something new.

Peter Hammers -always popular. and when they are a little older - When I was one I ate a bun the day I went to sea, 5 currant buns, also goes very well, 12345, once I caught a fish alive, twinkle, twinkle, (only because without doubt they all know it!) When all the cows were sleeping. Very difficult to choose 5 Finleysmaid, and of course they change with interests, I tried very hard with 5 little sandcastles sitting on the beach last term, I thought they would love it, but no! Funny old lot last year. 1
