Level 3 and GCSE Maths/English

Hi all,

I'm sure this was discussed when it hit the headlines a few months ago and I've had a quick trawl of the forum, but need clarification on this.

 

We employed someone earlier this year who had their Level 2 and was nearly finished their Level 3 (we employed her to replace a L3 member of staff) If I remember correctly, she told us at the time that she was also resitting GCSE Maths and English.

 

Then all the stuff kicked off about not being included in ratios if you didn't have GCSE Maths and English, and then some of it got retracted etc etc....

 

Today (our first day back) it has been brought to our attention by the powers of facebook and not the member of staff (!) that she didn't pass English. Am I correct in saying that she can't be included in ratios as a L3 (i.e. part of our 50% qualified) but we can continue to employ her as L2?

 

Could we terminate her contract as she hasn't met the required criteria to be a Level 3? Would you just offer her a few hours at L2 rate? Our numbers have dropped with the school leavers, so shifts have been reduced anyway and there are performance issues with this member of staff too, just to add to the issue.

 

Sorry to dump this on you all on the first day back but any help gratefully received!

Okay, it's been pointed out on Facebook that staff have confused themselves and me by half-hearing stories and Googling things, then panicking me!! I should learn to think sensibly before getting caught up in things. Lesson learned.

 

She can't be a room leader/deputy but as she has her L2 she is part of the 50% requirement.

I get that her L3 can't be taken away from her, and she can still have key children etc, but it;s just frustrating (generally speaking, not just for us) that they are now not able to be counted in ratios. I'm failing to see how these staff now 'fit into' it all!! Perhaps it's first day back brain!

 

I totally understand the driving up quality aspect of it all, but this has huge impacts across Early Years providers, especially those working with close to the bone 50% qualified.

Got it - I've edited my post from an answer on facebook. Staff got knickers in a twist about L3 being the requirement as part of the changes too. And I read the changes as that too, without referring back to the EYFS statutory requirements.

They don't make it easy to understand when things get worded differently every time and easy to interpret in many ways.

 

Also depends on when they started the level 3 - if before Sept 2014 then the GCSE requirement is not necessary..

 

Think the wording of 'not counted in ratio' makes everyone panic, but they can be as unqualified providing you have 50% of staff qualified.

the only reason I know the reply is I did exactly the same when I read info from the local college....then re-read and came back down off the ceiling !! xD

 

Trying to sort things with staff in a tailspin about it wasn't ideal! I think in my head I had all the recommendations from the Nutbrown review that never got accepted and then I just got confused. Thanks for putting me right and allowing me to sleep last night!

That was the problem - the 'included in ratio' bit. Too many changes to cope with and an impending Ofsted sending me into total meltdown. Where would I be without you guys?

I don't think so, but on my performance yesterday even I wouldn't trust me at the moment!!

 

This is from the DfE website -

The requirement for early years educator qualifications and GCSEs in English and maths will not be applied retrospectively. Staff and learners who hold or are working towards existing full and relevant qualifications will still be able to practice and will not need GCSEs in English and maths at Grade C or above.

No only those who started training from Sept 2014.

I have been told that the need for maths and english is going to be removed but I dont think this is true!!!!

My aforementioned member of staff returns in about 6 weeks...a full level 3 and didnt havt to do her matha and english.....but other lev 2 doing lev 3 cannot find a local study centre to do her GCSE Maths....might check online for her....

Hello,

I'm very new to this forum so not sure how it works!!!

I am manager of a setting, we have 3 staff in the room with the children (both qualified with 3 or above) we also have 2 unqualified bank staff sometimes helping out. Do the 2 unqualified bank staff need to have GCSE maths & English to be counted in ratio???

Welcome to the forum..

 

This rule only applies if you want to count staff as qualified in the ratio , and if they started training after Sept 2014, otherwise it is not a requirement to have Maths and English.
