Hi, Mottie,

Happy New Year. I used to work in a school as a midday supervisor and I was trying to think what they had in their Golden Rules. Un fortunately can only think of one, 'I will keep my hands and feet to myself' Sorry I can't be of more use,

Mary.

Like Lorna we ask the children themselves what they think they should be. They generally are based around - kind hands, kind words, good sharing, good listening, take turns. We then use photos around the room to illustrate the rules.

Like Lorna and Jacqui, we have a circle time discussion about the our 'golden rules', but I find that as many of the children in the our nursery come in with delayed communication skills I have to use a lot of stories before hand and prompts through out the circle time. :o

I also use digital photographs to illustrate the 'rules', make two copies, back them onto 'gold' card display one set around the room and use the other as a regular 'reminder'.

We usually decide our class rules at the beginning of the year in a circle time session. This years are

Be kind

Listen to what other people are saying

keep our classroom tidy

think too many rules are hard for young children to remember and if they think they made up the rules they are more eager to reinforce them.

We also have general school rules based around our moto f 'courtesy and Consideration' :)

Previous school: follow instructions first time they are given; be in the place you are supposed to be; be polite, call people by their proper names; walk in school; look after school and property. (Assertive Discipline)

Present school: We always tell the truth.

We are kind and gentle.

We are helpful.

We always work hard.

We listen to each other and we take turns to talk.

We look after our school and everything in it.

We look after other people’s things.

We play together and let others join in.
