AnonyMouse_30128
NOt quite the right area to post this in but more of a conversation than anything else! What training would you like to see available and what sort of cost would you pay per delegate? Is there any area in particular that you feel is not covered at the moment (!) AnonyMouse_22106
I would love to do Speech & Language training but it is so expensive - I would like to do any training to be honest, unfortuately we can't afford to do anything except the mandatory stuff now. I don't think it will be long before more and more settings get Requires Improvement because of the lack of training being completed - although saying that according to County all their courses are still full alebit it with Day Nursery staff rather than preschool playgroup staff

AnonyMouse_7120
Like thumperrabbit anything really, other than statutory safeguarding as that is about all that comes up on our county training, I'm beginning to get really annoyed when you see eyfs training on our county site for training that looks interesting ie maths in the outdoor environment and actually local to us, only to find when you try to book staff on it get rejected as 'schools only' ...gggrrrr we are eyfs too why can't we go, this is an area ofsted will look at, our county core training says all staff should update practical inclusion every 3 yrs, I managed to get 1 person on it this year, the rest haven't done it since 2009 :-/ Edited October 30, 2015 by Mouseketeer
AnonyMouse_30128
note....I have likes your responses due to the fact you responded !!!! Mouseketeer ,,,do you know who your school forum rep is for early years...perhaps this is something they could tackle? im fascinated as to how our lea is going to pass any SEND inspection...no training for years ...no senco for borough and little support for parents ...but that's another conversation. I find I often moan about not having training but when someone asks me what I want/need I can't think of a thing!

AnonyMouse_23964
We can apply for the basics through county - first aid, food hygiene, child protection/safeguarding (intro and lead practioner), health and safety etc. We also have a range of speech and language (Talkabout) courses. After reading some comments on here, I think we quite lucky - at the moment ..... Lots more cutbacks to come next year I think. It would be great to have more of the sort of courses that used to inspire us, eg. encourage us to really think about what it is to be a 2 year old going into a setting on that first day. I know that we have procedures in place but I can remember doing wonderful training in the past that just made me stop, take a step back and think - oh yes!!! We could probably not afford to pay more than £50 for anyone to attend a course. Are you thinking of setting up a training company Finleysmaid? ????
AnonyMouse_7120
I did ask my EYA (yep we still have one ) to report back ...though this is the same EYA that insists ofsted still registers me for a specific number and couldn't understand when I tried explaining that some of the 3yr olds don't have full 15hrs because 4 X 2yr olds per hour = 4 hrs I don't have to give to 3 yr olds ..rocket and science comes to mind
AnonyMouse_30128
Are you thinking of setting up a training company Finleysmaid? ???? Change may be in the offing...although it is VERY early days and may not come to anything at all! I am a trained trainer and I guess it may be something I could consider! trying to work out what gaps are in the market ......what about business skills? anyone think there might be something there too? Guess my specialisms are in the practicalities of pre-school like environments/active learning and sensory play! lots of eal and send too.
AnonyMouse_22106
Training for 'packaway' settings on creating an outstanding enabling environment both indoors and out With no PLA these days there is a gap for some sort of committee style training Writing a sucessful SEF / action plan Anything to do with 'curriculum' like Mouseketeer says it's all for maintained nurseries in our area too As I mentioned before it's the cost for us, we can book our advisors from County but at a cost £90 plus vat an hour it just isn't an option.
AnonyMouse_19802
Training for 'packaway' settings on creating an outstanding enabling environment both indoors and out .........with time management thrown in.......how fast can it be done? how many staff does it take to change a light bulb kinda thing?
Guest
Sorry to jump in on your post finleysmaid _ I have been running my own business alongside working as the registered manager of a pack away term time only setting (2 days per week). I started off offering managerial cover for holidays/sickness but would be interested like you to know if other settings would be willing to buy in other services! I hope you find a niche - in Lincolnshire we do get support from our local authority but the courses other than mandatory training are becoming less and less available! I don't know what your thoughts are regarding some current training (NVQ) not having enough of an emphasis on actual child development? Certainly the 2 settings that I work at often say how they feel that the basics are missing meaning that as managers we have to fill in the gaps as the very mention of miles stones or developmental levels if often met with a blank stare!! EYFS terminology - what it actually means in laymen terms may be a good one too. Positive behaviour techniques - boys and mark making which may fit in with your areas of expertise (environment). Hope it all goes well for you!
AnonyMouse_665
finleysmaid in our county settings with requires improvement get on training first. so course always full. I tried all year to do ecat training but could not get on. i ho to any consultations and provider meetings and everything rlse i csn be involved in to keep ip to date. ofsted came a few weeks ago tried to explain wanted to do courses but can't. in my report says manager offers limited access for staff to train along with other statements about staff development. Sge said there are other organisations that we could pay for training or get to gether with other settings. I don't need to tell you this is very difficult and not enough money in pot. by the way went from outstanding to requires improvement. ey advisor said no point of doing training for the sake of it. buttercup

I do feel there might be a market for a 'quick fix' evening session....sort of wham bam thank you mam! couple of hours ...perhaps not workshop based but with a decent amount of content. We have an SEN trainer who used to do that in this area....open hall lots of delegates ....cheap (£20) him talking and slide show kind of thing Thanks for all your replies so far...keep them coming! even if I don't do anything like this I think it's really important to know what people are finding usefull Any successful training out there?? AnonyMouse_14268
We are obviously very lucky in our county. We have quite a varied training directory, although for someone like me who has been round the block a few times it does get a bit samey!! But at least it is offered even though it is a bit expensive. I would love training to give me more ideas of activities to promote speech and language development as these always seem expensive.
AnonyMouse_665
Part of the furniture agree a lot of training is very samey when you have been around a long time. Our ey advisors ask what do we want. Not sure on that either. Sometimes just st getting together with other settings can be just as good. Ofsted did not see that as training though. AnonyMouse_14268
Totally agree, I love just meeting with other practitioner's to talk or just visiting other settings. Think this is a really useful thing to do.
