Next steps & next obs

We introduced Tapestry to our setting last September. The staff are finding the information created in 'next steps' and 'next obs' very overwhelming. There seems to be a lot of information and many of the suggestions seem to be for areas already observed. Does anyone have any suggestions about what we might be doing wrong or how we can tweak the settings to give us more accurate next steps?

I wouldn't say that you are necessarily doing anything 'wrong'. The system generates suggestions based on what you have inputted. If you find it too much, go to the children tab on the web version and click on 'reports', by the child's picture. This will give you an easier to follow look at what you could be looking for. You don't have to save the report, unless you want to. Give it a try and see if it's any easier for you .

The next steps are based on the age-band and refinement assessments that you have made- not the Development Matters statements. Therefore the next steps cover a wider area and might appear too many. I'd suggest you just pick a couple of relevant ones for each child from that list.

In the late summer, we'll be introducing a new system for next steps, and we're hoping to incorporate them into the obs screen to make for a smoother obs-assessment-next steps-planning-obs cycle :1b

This might seem obvious but i need to mention it. Next Steps are only available after an assessment is made in a particular area. Next observations are for when no assessments have been made in an area.

 

the system will simply pick the earliest next observations possible in each "untouched" area, or relevant next steps from the data you have inputted.

 

it is also only a guide.. it is just feeding you information into what areas you need to be observing and assessing a child in due to being either no information, or less information than another area of learning.

 

Also to add, if you input a baseline for a child over a 4-6 week period for example, and try to cover every area of learning within this period, you should have none or little next observations, and only next steps going forward.

Another thing to be aware of as well as what Broadoaks has mentioned is that the old Next Steps disappear at the end of each term.
