Guest Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 We will soon be getting chickens for our outside area I feel a risk assessment needs to be done Does anyone happen to have one I could see as I'm not experienced in chicken care! And wouldn't want to miss anything vital out Any useful tips vey warmly appreciated Thanks in advance ?
AnonyMouse_55063 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Sounds great - we have budgies in our setting.. and have a risk assessment. Risks from - psittacine and biting basically.. (psittacine - includes the macaws, parakeets, and most other parrots) so this really is clutching at straws! We use Anti Mite drops, and vigilance and explain to children the dangers! lol dangers. Any ill health symptoms then a visit to the vets of course.. Not sure what else.. maybe bird droppings?!! I dunno Edited January 27, 2016 by BroadOaks
AnonyMouse_1469 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 RATS........................chickens tend to attract them, so consider what you will do to deter them....or deal with them if/when they do appear. 1
AnonyMouse_13453 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Handling food. Enclosure safety. I think psittacosis is possible from anything with feathers, isn't it? I'd need to check that one.
AnonyMouse_39602 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Wear gloves when plucking and don't wash before cooking ! 3
AnonyMouse_29664 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Are these chickens going to be running free or in an enclosure? You might need to consider disposal of shavings etc when they are cleaned out. We had chickens for a while and the children loved them but it all went horribly wrong when one got sick and and then exploded at the vets - grim!
Guest Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 They are going to be in an enclosure Sorry to hear about your chicken
AnonyMouse_31953 Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Exploding chickens...not good.....but made me smile this busy monday morning....we too had chickens for a while...children loved them, but the dreaded vermin eventually arrived....so they were rehomed at employees mums farm in the country....xx
AnonyMouse_29641 Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Do check the deeds to the property. I bought my house with a big garden specifically to have a few chooks, but the conveyancing discovered a note on the deeds specifically forbidding the keeping of fowls.
