New Topic Ideas

Guest

Recommended Posts

Ok, so as this half term draws to an end, I'm looking for inspiration for my topic for next half term which is sound and music.

Anyone think of anything great that has really worked with their class?

My kids are aged between 7 and 9 but working at anything from 3 months to 4 years in terms of development.

Anyone think of any good stories? My mind has gone totally blank.

I'm a musician, so we've got plenty of good ideas for that, but I'm just having a total mental block and thought I'd come to my great virtual resource bank and see what great ideas you guys have!

Thanks,

Nich

what about making them clothes from old curtains and getting them to sing on top of mountains... oh sorry misread your message...

I thought you said 'Sound of Music' not 'Sound and Music' :D:D:D

on a more sensible note what about learning a few simple songs from around the world... I think ELC have a CD out with simple songs on. You could also look at instruments from other countries too, even make some!

back to basics, all the sounds derived from kitchen equipment, pots and pans, wooden spoons, bowl drums etc get parents involved in bringing in items. My children have enjoyed water in milk bottle zylophone ( obviously needs 1-1 supervision)

Have fun. :D

Hehe, thanks, we've lots of these kinds of things in school and I had thought about this, as for the 1:1 supervision, most of my class need that with all activities! When we're fully staffed and all kids in we're 1:2 so not bad when doing things like this.

Thanks for the ideas so far, any more?

The children in my group love watching the visual patterns on my laptop screen when music is played through windows media player. I know it's not quite what you were after but it does incorporate another sense and inspires some lovely paint masterpieces.

Do you know anyone who plays less known instruments? My mum plays the accordian and we devised a short maypole dance to folk music. ( I was the pole :o and I, and the children held plastic ribbons made from a door curtain) The children often ask when is Great Nanny Peggy coming back in.

You've also reminded me I have a zither in the attic and some old squeeze boxes ( can't remember their proper name) which I keep meaning to take in to preschool. Maybe some of your parents have unnusual or old instruments. What was that one called that Rolf Harris used to play, the electrical mini organ with a pen?

which reminds me........

We also have a Digeridoo at preschool, the children love it if I place the end of the "tube" on their tummy's, they can feel the vibration as I blow, low deep rasberry's down the tube. xD:(:D

I play clarinet and saxophone and the only other people I know that play instruments at all are other teachers or people who couldn't come into work. My ex housemate used to own a digeridoo but I don't speak to her anymore, don't even think she lives in the country! Could make our own though, along with the other instruments we'll try to make in our art/dt slots.

Any more stories anyone? I have to turn them into sensory stories for my PMLD kids, so have to have plenty of time to do it before I read it in class! Spent all weekend making a powerpoint version of This is the house that Jack built for this week, complete with sounds and soft toy animals etc (end of houses and homes topic)

Ohh ok, the final version is on the server at work, so I'll attach it another day, when I remember to put it on my memory stick.

I tried it out this afternoon on my tiny class (just 3 in today) and they loved it!

Peggy it was a Stylophone I think! HUbby had one and still misses it - says it was white with a trim but his dad threw it out :o

Wish I could help NIchola but music is NOT my area of expertise - luckily they get specialist teachers for music here right from nursery. Still do some myself in class but the bulk comes in the music lessons :D
