Ofsted expectation for on-entry into school Nursery?

Recommended Posts

They don't really define it any more but we still use that - emerging 30 - 50 as the children would be at least 36 months as they start term after third birthday.

Thanks. Does the previous guidance that the expected step for on entry in to Reception is emerging 40-60 with some children dipping in to working within 40-60 no longer in place too?

That's what we say - Ofsted wouldn't say anything now as that's all non statutory and not even part of dev matters anyway!!! the steps only exist in our own agreed perception of what's what.

I see. i didn't realise that the Ofsted expectation was no longer in place. In your experience, are most schools still using that bench mark?

Pretty much as it's the most sensible interpretation of a rather clunky system, The DfE also published Early years outcomes, which is also for Ofsted inspectors to help understand typical development so an Inspector woould refer to it but the main thing you have to show is how you are enabling children to make progress towards the ELGs.

As people may start to use other systems (such as the new Early excellence model) the concept of emerging/developing etc may disappear as a common term anyway.
