Uploading large videos

Updated 02/06/21

To keep our servers running smoothly and keep the Tapestry subscription cost affordable, Tapestry has limits on the file size and length of individual video you can upload.

The current limits for a single video are 5GB or 10 minutes, whichever limit is reached first.

It's worth noting older versions of the Tapestry app have lower limits, so make sure you have the most up to date Android or iOS  app installed.

We appreciate that you may have a longer video you would like to upload, or perhaps a shorter video recorded at a very high resolution, so here are a few tips to optimise your videos for the limits on Tapestry. Click the link that best describes your issue:

1) Video is longer than 10 minutes

2) Video is larger than 5GB in file size

3) How to change your video recording quality / Limit length

Video is longer than 10 minutes

If your video is longer than 10 minutes it won't be possible to upload it to Tapestry as a single video file.

You can use an editing application to edit the video into two or more parts of less than 10 minutes each, or trim the length so it is reduced to less than 10 minutes run time.

Android - This varies depending on Android version but there is often editing functionality within the Android photo gallery, or free editing apps available from the Google Play Store. The below picture shows the edit option within the photo gallery for Android 9.

iOS - You can use the built in 'Photos' app to do this. Just tap 'Edit' while viewing a video in the gallery and you will have the option to trim the video.

PC - On Windows 10 you can use the Microsoft 'Video Editor' app which is part of the built in photo gallery, or install a variety of professional editing software.

Video is larger than 5GB in file size

If your video is above 5GB in size it will be too large to upload to Tapestry.

If your video is under ten minutes in length it is likely the large file size is due to HD recording quality being selected. The best option would be to save the video at a lower quality, which will significantly reduce the file size.

All videos uploaded to Tapestry are processed and saved at 480p resolution, so there is no need to upload a high-quality video to Tapestry, the quality of the final video on Tapestry will be similar for HD and SD videos.

Android - On newer Android versions you can use the edit option within the photo gallery to change the resolution of the video to a smaller resolution, which will reduce the file size.

iOS - There is no built in video compression tool for iPhones and iPads but you can download a 3rd party app to do this or transfer the video to a PC to reduce the file size.

PC - On Windows 10 you can use the Microsoft 'Video Editor' app which is part of the built in photo gallery, or install a variety of professional editing software.

With the Microsoft Video Editor app simply add the video to the app, select 'Finish Video' and then choose a lower resolution.

How to change your video recording quality / Limit length

If you would like to prevent future videos from becoming too long or too large to upload to Tapestry you do have a couple of options.

You can record videos through the Tapestry app, which will automatically cut off at the limit, or you can reduce the video recording quality for your device camera. This can vary by device, but hopefully these tips will point you in the right direction.

Android - You can change your video and camera settings to reduce the recording resolution. Either tap the cog icon within the camera app or find Camera Settings within the Android settings app.

iOS - To change the recording resolution open the Settings app and find 'Camera'. Change the 'Record Video' option to a lower resolution.

Unfortunately 15 minutes of video is unlikely to be under our 100MB limit, however well it is compressed.

You can split it into a series of short chunks, though this may be more hassle than it is worth to you.
