AnonyMouse_14268
I have a group of boys who are using the superhero dressing up clothes, but who are then just running around and play fighting. What can I provide to extend this interest and make it productive and non aggressive? I thought about making a superhero headquarters role play area but fear that the play will still be too boisterous and aggressive. Any ideas of what I can do and provide would be really appreciated. AnonyMouse_19782
Firstly Zigzag you have my sympathies,  we had the very behaviour you are experiencing for quite a long time  We found regardless of what we did it generally either started off that way or ended up going that way, as that, tbh, was all they really wanted to do. That was the true level of their understanding. We so want to go with their interests, but at the same time, need to and want to achieve some kind of teaching with it. I made superhero challenge cards, a different superhero logo on one side and the challenge on the other, we would pow wow in the superhero meeting place and one child was chose to pick a card and they would try to do the challenge, which, frankly some days was just to do something helpful, if a superhero did something thoughtful or helpful they got to ring the big hand bell we have.- that worked for a bit, but they didnt really keep on wanting to do it during the whole time they were into superhero play. I had books about the heroes which were like encyclopedias lots of pictures and information about them and their "arch enemies" so that we could sit and "discuss" their relative attributes. We had the Busy Book of Superheroes which actually they loved all the tiny little models and we built platforms etc. from lego - they would talk about them when in this mode and it was quieter play.,we did the usual "makes" we also made a huge poster on some cardboard of one of their enemies and I bought them some silly string, so once they had completed superhero training assault course they could release the string at the baddy.. We had secret writing, - candles and paint., we made star wars light sabres from wrapping paper tubes, we made bracelets in superhero colours repeating patterns if we could get them to do it. They had to thread them onto pipe cleaners., we had musical super heroes - when the music stopped they had to adopt a superhero pose, we had every superhero piece of music we could find on the ipod.. We even restricted them to superhero play only until a certain time. It was endless. I don't know whether we fuelled it by following their interests and providing, or we basically had a couple of obsessive boys but it just went on and on. Their role playing was a lot easier to "put up with" when they were outside. It also made me more determined to find "stuff" they would want to do which wasn't related to superheroes though, sciencey sort of stuff was popular, "mad professor" type experiments with bi-carb and vinegar, just changing the colour of water with food colouring and pipettes and lots of differently shaped containers........anything which I thought would impact and distract them from their "play" without banning it.
