AnonyMouse_73 Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 This seems to link with the report published yesterday by the institute of economic affairs. It was in nursery world this week http://www.nurseryworld.co.uk/nursery-world/news/1160244/government-urged-to-scrap-universal-funded-childcare The report recommends, amongst other things 'Remove staff-child ratios and mandated qualifications of carers to ensure different types of childcare are provided for parents to choose from. With growing class sizes in schools, and the academies agenda which don't have to have qualified teachers any more, you can begin to see how this thinking mirrors what's happening within education generally Quote

AnonyMouse_19802 Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 Some of the stuff in the actual IEA document made a lot of sense tbh. Yes agree. Comments like: ...why do the government have to be SO involved in childcare and preschool.... .......an over elaborate EYFS, with children being observed, assessed, photographed, assessed , observed, again and again!! Preschool, playschool, call it what you want but it used to be Fun!! Someone needs to take a proper look at the OUTCOME! So much pressure is being placed on the sector it will crash and burn, and all this responsibility - on a shoe-string! 6 Quote

Yay we could go back to the old days, we have unqualified but motivated staff !! :1b We will only be able to pay them minimum wage though.............. oh hang on - we can only afford to pay our overworked stressed out qualified staff minimum wage so we wont really be any better off!  Edited February 8, 2017 by louby loo 4 Quote
AnonyMouse_3139 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Well, we're meeting Monday to discuss our future. Closure is very close. But I was thinking along the same lines. Close up then re-open a couple of hours a day to play. Just play. No wage. No hassle. No Ofsted or EY advisors. 2 Quote

The idea of going back to preTony Blair times is indeed very appealing! I have sooo many parents wanting their two year olds to start maybe there is a place for it?? No funded places at all. No hassle. What's not to like? Think parents are very willing to pay to get their 'terrible twos' off their hands!! May need to invest in Valium tho! Quote
AnonyMouse_3139 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 I'm really thinking of extending on what the lovely lady has done in our church hall on a Monday for 30 odd years and running a small toddler group. Two hours a morning, lots of cushions on the floor, arts, crafts, music and play. And in place of your valium...Gin! 2 Quote

AnonyMouse_22106 Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Well, we're meeting Monday to discuss our future. Closure is very close.. Sorry to hear this Rea, I know you are a traditional pre-school Is this because of the 30 hours, or would it be 'on the cards' anyway? Quote
AnonyMouse_8282 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Such sad times. I feel that we may be following Rea very soon too Ours are slightly different issues- but with all the problems above that are added I really don't feel I have the commitment that Rea has left in me to fight for it anymore. Quote
AnonyMouse_55077 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I think we are all struggling to continue to fight and stay open, its just not fair. I watched the video and it just added to my anger over 30 hours - dont watch it!!!! I One comment was how nurseries are "doing very well out of it sucking up the money." In addition apparently we are going to "run off into the sunset with bags of tax payers cash"unbelievable. The only thing we are going to be running into is debt!!!!! Its ill informed programmes like these that keep painting the wrong picture. The government should provide us with enough to cover costs and pay a fair wage. The only way I can see to sort this would be for every childcare provider to show solidarity and refuse to offer the initiative unless it was properly funded. 1 Quote
AnonyMouse_3139 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 (edited) Sorry to hear this Rea, I know you are a traditional pre-school Is this because of the 30 hours, or would it be 'on the cards' anyway? Its low numbers mostly, I popped in this morning and there were 5 children, no absences! The 30 hours might help us keep children who go to the nursery next door but in a shared hall we can only offer set days. Reluctantly, we're looking closely at taking funded 2s. I didn't want to go that roroute and lose all autonomy over our income but it might be the only way. We can pay the bills till easter but unless we get more children on the waiting list, July will see us close. We have 8 weeks before the final decision has to be made Its awful, so sad obviously for the staff who will lose their jobs but for the community too. There are no playgroups like ours within 3 miles and while that isn't as great distance it will leaveba big hole! But its not over yet, we can do anything in early years and we won't give up yet! AnonyMouse_23964 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I'm wondering whether we may be able to 'mop up' hours where children are unable to access all their hours in one setting. It's not ideal but if it allows us to survive as a village pre-school and continue to offer a service to local children???????? 2 Quote
AnonyMouse_3139 Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 No different to children going to more than one setting now. Go for it ☺ 1 Quote

Don't you take 2 year olds now Rea? Our traditional playgroup setting wouldn't have survived without 2 year olds since the introduction of the 3yr funding, all those years ago. in fact I'm hoping the introduction of the 30 hours will help them; as although nobody seems to be saying how the Maintained school nurseries are approaching this, I can see that they won't be able to take as many children as they do now and therefore there will be more children in the community for longer? 1 Quote
AnonyMouse_3139 Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 We take from 2.5 but we've never had funded 2s only fee payers. We were asked by the local children's center to take them a few years ago but we said no, then we had a Requires Improvement so we couldn't take them. Now, there are 300 children who are eligible who arent accessing a funded place so, now we've got our GOOD back, its silly not to go for it. We need another member of staff, which at the moment we can't afford so its a balancing act. Quote
