How do I see attainment for an individual child?

Recommended Posts

Please note that this tutorial is about tracking for the old EYFS. For information about tracking screens for the new EYFS 2021, please click here.

This tutorial has been created to take you through the screens on Tapestry which show you a child’s attainment for each period.

Attainment on Tapestry is displayed in two distinct ways. The first way, which is shown in the first three screens in this tutorial, will just show you the age band and refinement (if you have refinements enabled) that either you have selected, or that Tapestry has calculated based on the assessments you have made for the child throughout the period.

The second type of attainment on Tapestry, which the last screen in this tutorial shows, is calculated based on the average number of months the child has been assessed as minus their actual age in months. This tutorial here explains in greater depth exactly how these figures are calculated. You might want to take a look at that before continuing with this tutorial, but when you're ready, let's start with the snapshot section.

To skip to a specific section of this tutorial please use the links below.

  1. Snapshots - Summative Assessments
  2. Snapshots - Latest Age Bands
  3. Child Comparison Screen
  4. Attainment Child Picker Screen

We'll start by looking at how to see a child's attainment using the summative assessment screens.

Snapshots - Summative Assessments

You'll find the summative assessment screens by clicking on the Tracking tab at the top of the page (1), make sure you are on the EYFS section (2) and then in the Summative Assessment box you’ll either need to select the ‘Individual view’ or ‘Group view’ button (3). We’ll take a look at the individual view option first.

Once you have selected the ‘Individual view’ button you will then need to choose a child, year and period from the drop-down menus.

The chart below will then show you the age band and refinement, if you have these enabled, that Tapestry has calculated for the child for each aspect in that period. This is worked out as an average of the assessments you have made for that child in that period. To see the observations that have contributed to the score you just need to click on the ‘Show Details’ button at the end of the row of each aspect.

If the child has not been assessed in an aspect it will show up as no colour and will say ‘Not Assessed’ and ‘No Refinement’.

You can override any of the scores on this page if you disagree with the calculated average or you want to fill in a blank, from the drop-down menus in the age band and refinement columns.

You can also lock the snapshot so the figures can't be edited either manually by the staff or automatically by the system when new assessments are added for the running summative assessment period.

If you want to see this information for several children at once then you might find it easiest to look at the ‘Group View’ option I mentioned earlier. You can filter the children you see using the page filters at the top of the page.

If you’re interested in finding out more about this page or how to change how the scores are calculated for your summative assessments you can take a look at this tutorial here.

Snapshots - Latest Age Bands

The 'Summative Assessment' section in the EYFS Snapshots will only show you the information for a child, or group of children, for one specific term. EYFS assessments on Tapestry do not pull through to future periods so the data you see in the summative assessments section is only based on assessments made in that period.

If you know you won't assess every child in every aspect, every period, but you want to see the most recent summative assessment data for each aspect, you can take a look at the 'Latest Age Bands' section on the Snapshots.

You can find this by again going to the Tracking tab, select EYFS, and in the Earliest & Latest Age Bands section choose either the individual or group view.

Once you've done that you'll just need to select a child (or group if you've chosen the other view) and select 'Latest Assessments' from the 'Type' drop-down menu.

This screen will then populate an age band and refinement for each aspect for a child, based on their most recent summative assessment, it will also show you the period this most recent summative assessment is for.

To learn more about this screen you can read this tutorial here.

Child Comparison Screen

The next screen you can take a look at is the child comparison screen found by again going to the Tracking tab and selecting EYFS, then in the Analysis column and in the Dashboard box, click on the Comparison: Individual button.

You can use this screen to look at progress but as we are focusing on attainment I’m just going to select one child and one term using the ‘Add Snapshot’ button and the ‘Add Child’ one.

This screen will then show you a bar graph of the child’s attainment for each aspect in the period you selected; this is a useful way for you to compare a child’s attainment across aspects in a single term.

Finally, let’s move on to the 'Attainment' section on Tapestry.

Attainment Child Picker Screen

This can again be found from the Tracking tab by clicking on the Child button in the Attainment box within the EYFS Analysis column.

Once you have selected a period and group of children to filter this information by you will be able to see a chart with the overall attainment figure for the child as well as the attainment broken down for each aspect. These figures show you the difference between the child's actual age and their assessed age. For a more detailed look at how this is calculated, please read this tutorial here. In the places where you only see dashes, there is no data for that term in that aspect.

It’s not possible to see this for just one child but you can pick out individual children from the list.

So those are all the screens you can use to look at attainment for individual children on Tapestry.
