Can someone please explain how the average number of observations figure is got to on the Thoroughness picker please.

I am guessing that for the number if observations so for children to be good then the average number needs to be 2.

Please help.

Many thanks

Hi Mel,

Of course!

The thoroughness figures are actually calculated based on the number of assessments, rather than the number of observations.

Each child's thoroughness score is calculated as the total number of assessments in a term, divided by 17. The figure of 17 is based on the number of EYFS aspects. So, a thoroughness score of 1, would mean you have made 17 different assessments.

Please note that this does not mean each aspect has an assessment, as one aspect could have more than one assessment, it just means the total would be 17. You can always check the distribution of assessments from the thoroughness child picker screen.

Whilst it's not possible to change how thoroughness figures are calculated, you can change the ranges for whether the scores are considered as trailing, satisfactory or good. It's also possible to change these terms of trailing, satisfactory or good if you have your own terminology. You can do this by going to the control panel -> settings -> analysis, in the 'Qualitative Ranges' you just need to click on the 'Thoroughness tab'.

I hope this clarifies things for you!

Best wishes,

Emily
