Sneha Posted March 12, 2018 Share Posted March 12, 2018 This tutorial will talk you through the Leuven Analysis Screens that are available to you on Tapestry. In order to view these screens, the Leuven scales will need to be enabled via your Control Panel by following this tutorial. Note: The Leuven system of measuring well-being and engagement was written in 1994 as a tool for staff to use to evaluate their early years environment. The premise was that by observing and measuring how children were engaging in the environment teachers could see if they needed to modify to improve their teaching spaces to improve the outcomes for children. You can use Leuven on Tapestry to evaluate your provision by reviewing children’s engagement and well-being by observing them in your different learning spaces. Over time, Leuven has begun to be used as a tool to assess children individually, this is not the original intended purpose. Any observation or assessment of children’s well being needs to be completed in the light of the PSED statements contained within Development Matters. Subsequently, any PSED assessments need to be viewed holistically as part of the collection of knowledge key people have about the child. Thus, early intervention support and help for the child can be accessed swiftly if there are concerns regarding their ability to engage or if they are displaying low levels of well-being. Leuven Dashboard Leuven Thoroughness Screen Leuven Attainment Screen We'll start by looking at the Leuven Analysis Dashboard. Leuven Dashboard To access the Leuven Dashboard you need to click on the 'Tracking' tab at the top of the page (1), select the 'Leuven' framework (2) and then click on the 'Leuven Dashboard' button (3). You will then be presented with the below screen. This will show you: (1) How many approved/unapproved Leuven assessments have been made for active children on your account. (2) The period you are viewing this for. You can change this from the 'Period' drop-down. (3) Which group of children you are seeing this for. You can change this from the 'Group' drop-down. (4) You will also be given the distribution of assessments according to Well-being and Involvement. Leuven Thoroughness Screen Next let's have a look at the Leuven Thoroughness Screen will show you how many observations within a period have Leuven assessments linked to them and the average score for well-being and involvement for each scale. To access the Leuven Thoroughness Screen again go to the 'Tracking' tab (1) and select 'Leuven' (2), then choose the 'Leuven Thoroughness Screen' button (3). You will then be presented with the following screen: After you have accessed the screen, the top menu will give you the options to: go back to the Analysis Home page, go up to the previous screen (in this case the Dashboard), go back to a previous step and/or be able to export your result (1). If you click on 'Set options' (2) you will be given the option to filter according to your (a) 'Key Children' as below: You can then filter according this screen to period or set a custom period as required (3) as well as filter according to group (4). In this example we will be viewing 'all children'. The first thing to look at in the graph is the key for the thoroughness results for Well-being and Involvement presented as a graph (5). Within the graph you will be able to see the names of the children on the vertical axis and the number of assessments for well-being and involvement on the horizontal axis (6) and underneath this you will also be able to see the results in a table format with the names of the children with Leuven assessments listed in the first column (7). The thoroughness results for well-being will be calculated according to the number of observations containing assessments and the average score they produce for well-being (8) and the results for involvement will be calculated according to the number of observations containing assessments and the average score they produce for involvement (9). You can set the parameters for the number of observations you see in the results by clicking on 'Add filter' (10). You will then see the following pop up: (a) From here you will be able to select which scale you wish to change the parameters for - either Well-being or Involvement. (b) You can then amend the number of observations you wish to see the scores for - therefore if we change it to between 1 and 3 observations, you will only see results for children who have between 1 and 3 assessments for Leuven. (c) Click 'OK' to add your filter. Below the chart of scores you will see the list of children who have no Leuven assessments, or do not match the applied filters (11). If you find this screen helpful you can add it to your list of 'favourites' if you wish to have quick access to it in the future. It will then show up in your 'favourites' list under the 'Leuven' tab in Tracking (12). Leuven Attainment Screen Finally, I will show you the Leuven Attainment Screen. This gives you the average attainment score for well-being and involvement for observations within a period that have Leuven assessments linked to them. To access the Leuven Attainment Screen click on the 'Tracking' tab (1), then select 'Leuven' (2) and click on the 'Leuven Attainment Screen' button (3). After you have accessed the screen, the top menu will give you the options to: go back to the Analysis home page, go up to the previous screen (in this case the Dashboard), go back to a previous step and/or be able to export your results. You will also be able to see the results in a table format with the names of the children with Leuven assessments listed in the first column underneath (6). The attainment results for Well-being will be calculated according to the number of observations containing assessments and the average score they produce for well being (7) and the attainment results for Involvement will be calculated according to the number of observations containing assessments and the average score they produce for involvement (8). You can set the parameters for the number of observations you see in the results by clicking on the 'Add filter' button (9). You will then see the following pop up: (a) From here you will be able to select which scale you wish to change the parameters for - either Well-being or Involvement. (b) You can then amend the scales for which you wish to see attainment scores for - therefore if we change it to between low and high, you will only see results for children who have assessments that fall between low and high. (c) Click 'OK' to add your filter. Underneath the graph you will see the list of children who have no Leuven assessments, or do not match the applied filters (10). To add the Attainment Screen to your list of 'favourites', if you wish to have quick access to it in the future, you just need to click on 'Add current screen favourites' button (11).
