Monitoring sleeping children in setting

Recommended Posts

We had our Ofsted inspection last week and the inspector wants us to record how often we check the children sleeping. Does anyone else do this and if so how often do you check and how do you record this. We are worried as its an old building we creaky floors and doors that we are going to disturb our sleeping babies, obviously  we are frequently in and out at sleep time settling the babies to sleep and then usually check on them once settled every 20/30 mins. Just wondering if we should change our baby monitor for one with a video. Would love to hear what other settings are doing please.

We put this in place after our last policy review. PSLA suggest checking every 10 minutes. If you have children asleep you might need to leave someone in the room if it's tricky to come in and out.

This policy came in to play about a year or so ago following a death of a little one having got caught in bedding and another who was 'set upon' by another child! There is also the historic case of a child being strangled by a blind cord.......remind me again why we do this job!!!!

Just realised this sounded like this happened to us...it didn't ! it just shows you the importance of checking small ones!!

We check all sleeping children every 10 minutes and record it on the care diary -we also note the 'going to sleep' process (e.g. singing in cot, quiet with dummy and blanket). We also check babies under 6 months and children new to us every 5 minutes until we are happy that we know 'how' they sleep. As louby loo said above, we have a member of staff on duty in and around the sleep area - they do some paperwork, fold linen ready for putting away, sit and clean baby toys etc. so that they are immediately available. We also write which member of staff is doing this job so that other staff know not to disturb them. This works well after lunch when lots of our toddlers sleep and we might have 8 or 10 'sleepers'. If a baby sleeps during the session and is the only one we make sure that we are playing quietly in our quiet room which is open plan linked to our baby room

I've put a couple of pictures of our baby room so that you can see what I mean:

This is our messy / noisy room with access to the garden, the right end of the radiator links to the stable door you can see in the second picture.  Our babies that need to sleep during the session are in a room to the right of the orange display board, you can see we have low walls so that we can see them clearly and be sure they are safe. Hope that helps
