About the Tapestry Next Steps

The Next Steps that are generated automatically by Tapestry are general suggestions of things you can do to help assess a child in a higher age band/refinement. They come from the Development Matters statements for the appropriate age band, from the Enabling Environment guidance and from the Positive Relationships ideas.

You can also customize the Next Steps statements by adding your own. Remember, both the Tapestry statements and any custom statements you add are general so they will be available to choose for all children who are at the same desired progression level. I’ll explain what this means later in this tutorial.

Tapestry promotes the use of these Next Step statements as a guidance of typical progression and follows the Development Matters direction that: Children develop at their own rates, and in their own ways.  The development statements and their order should not be taken as necessary steps for individual children. They should not be used as checklists.

To navigate to a particular section within this tutorial please use the links below

  1. Setting the Refinement Threshold
  2. Adding/removing custom Next Steps
  3. Where to find a child’s Next steps
  4. Using ‘Tagging’ to track child-specific next steps

We'll begin by looking at how to set the refinement threshold.

Setting the Refinement Threshold

To set up and view your next steps, you will firstly need to ensure you have enabled EYFS assessments on your account. To do this, go to control panel (1) > settings (2) > summative assessments (3). Scroll down to ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ and tick the box ‘Include refinements’ (4). Remember to click 'Save' if you make any changes (5).

Now you are ready to set your ‘refinement threshold’ – the point at which next steps will be generated. You can find this section by going to the Control Panel (1), then selecting 'Settings' (2) and from this drop-down choose the 'Analysis' option (3). Here you can choose the refinement (emerging, developing, or secure) (4) at which Tapestry should start showing "Next Steps" for the age band above the current one.
For example, if a child's snapshot said they were 30-50 developing and the refinement threshold was set to secure, Tapestry would keep showing you the next steps for 30-50 until the child reached 30-50 secure. However, if a child's snapshot said they were 30-50 developing and the refinement threshold was set to developing, Tapestry would show the next steps for 40-60+.

The next steps are generated once a child has been assessed in the period you are looking at. The desired progression starting point is based on their summative assessment for the term you are looking at. The desired progression end point is the higher age/band or refinement Tapestry is trying to help you assess the child at. How this is calculated will depend on what you have your refinement threshold set as - I explain this above.  Once a child’s summative assessment reaches the desired progression, new next steps will be generated.

 Adding/removing custom Next Steps

On this page you can also add your own Next Steps for each aspect and progression. Customized statements are general and will apply to all children at the same progression.

First you need to select an aspect that you would like to edit from the first drop-down box.

Then select a progression from the second drop-down list.

Once you have done that, a new section will appear containing the current statements for your selection. To add a custom statement, click on the "Add next step" button.

A pop-up window will appear. Type the statement into the text-area, then click the "OK" button.

To remove or edit a custom statement, click on the "X" or the pencil to the right of the statement in the list.

Where to find a child’s Next steps

When looking at a child's profile card on the Children tab (1), you can find the links for 'Next Steps' by clicking on a child's name (2). You will then find 'Next Steps' in the drop-down list (3).

Clicking on 'Next Steps' will take you to the page shown below.

Here you will see where you have made assessments for a child and view suggested opportunities/’next steps’ you might consider providing to enable you to progress the child from the current point of assessment to the next age band. Remember, next steps won’t appear until you are assessing a child in the term you are looking at.

Using ‘Tagging’ to track child-specific next steps

You can use the ‘Tagging’ system on Tapestry to add custom next steps for individual children. To do this you would use the notes section within an observation to add what you think you need to focus on for that child.

This is where you can use your knowledge of the child to plan the most appropriate next step for them. Here you can record groupings, activities and experiences that will help this child progress.

You can use the tagging system by adding the heading #nextsteps to track these comments and come back to them . This tutorial will explain in more depth how to use the ‘Tagging’ system on Tapestry.
