EmilyTapestrySupport
Please note that this tutorial refers to the previous CoEL from the old EYFS. To learn how to set up and use the new CoETL, click here. To be able to assess the CoEL framework on your account you will firstly need to enable it. You can do this by clicking on your name in the top right-hand corner of the page (1) and then selecting 'Control Panel' (2). From the left-hand side menu you will need to choose 'Settings' (3) and from that drop-down menu you will then need to select 'Assessments' (4). In the 'Characteristics of Effective Learning' section, just click on the 'Configure' button (5). On the pop-up you then just need to tick the option 'Enable Characteristics of Effective Learning' (1). If you also want relatives to be able to see these assessments then you just need to tick the option below as well (2). Once you're done, just click on 'Submit' (3). Now that you have this framework enabled on your account, when you go to add an observation, you will see it in the assessments section. Within an observation you can select as many relevant CoEL descriptors as you wish across the three different areas and the aspects within those. By selecting the relevant characteristics of effective learning with observations, you will be able to build up patterns of how children are learning. You can use this knowledge of their interests and demeanours to support your planning for their next experiences. You can read the article Observing and Assessing Extended Tutorial for Tapestry Users on the FSF which demonstrates the ways in which the Areas of Learning and CoEL work together to create an in depth picture of each child. If you want to look at what observations you have done that include CoEL assessments, you can use the 'Assessments' tab on the Observations page as indicated by the screenshot below. On the next screen you can then select 'Characteristics of Effective Learning' from the framework drop-down (1). You then have the further options to refine by category (2) and sub-category (3). Below you will then see all the observations that include CoEL assessments, narrowed down by category and sub-category if you have selected either of these options (4). This screen can be helpful in looking at the pattern of CoEL observations across the setting to see whether there are some descriptors that feature in observations all the time and others very little. Staff could then reflect on why this might be happening and think about changes they could make to their practice. If you just want to look at observations say for a specific child, you can use the page filters just by clicking where it says 'Filter & Sort Observations' (5). You can use this screen to reflect on the way an individual child is learning and how you can introduce resources and experiences to enable them to explore and venture into other CoEL. If you want to learn how to use the CoEL tracking screens on Tapestry, and how these can help you track the patterns of your children's learning, this tutorial will talk you through how.
