Our role play area was a spaceship, which the children loved. We had a cardboard silver covered rocket, wiht seats, telescopes, keyboards. There was a table with telephones, walkie talkies, keyboard notepads, pens. We had a small discovery table in the role play area, covered wiht black paper, with rocks and magnifying glasses. we introduced alien/pace dressing up clothes later, but the children made up some lovely adventures without them to begin with. we had bubbe wrap on the floor too. The language they used with each other was great, and it got some childrne interacting wiht others who normally play alone.

We had a school visit from the explorer dome which told us a story about the constellation and the children made up stories about characters they could 'see'in the stars. They made and described aliens, whihc hung down around the spaceship. You could make an alien book (individual or group). My class like making their individual books (e.g. zig -zag). Do you have any phonic books - we have a big book 'Zug the bug' - covers a bit of CVC work! Or you could make up your own CVC name for an alien, and think of things he likes that rhyme with his name? They could write/talk about a report from the spaceship of things they have seen on their adventures. They may come up with their own wrtiting ideas when doing role play that you could pick up from and follow on. How about writing messages with chalk outside on playground from an alien, that they could respond to (on paper, or reply on chalk outside for alien to read).

Our plans were led a lot from the children as it was during our book week, whihc had a theme of 'The earth around us' whch we adapted as spae and continued on becase it to0k the children's imagination.

Good luck and have fun!

Introducing the children to the concept of maps (KUW) we used Google Earth to invite the children to see how the earth appears from space then we zoomed down (using the interactive whiteboard) exactly to the school grounds saying that we thought we had seen something land in the playground.

We took the children outside and they found a few strange marks on the ground and a letter from an alien who told us how he had landed on Earth for a holiday and wanted to know more about our school. We asked the children for ideas and they drew maps of the school for the alien, they drew pictures of themselves and wrote letters to the alien so he could take them back to his planet. We also found out that the first person to land on a planet was a dog and a monkey the children were very interested, asking all sorts of questions. We made beautiful space pictures (Jackson Pollock style) and made rockets from silver foil and washing up liquid bottles which we numbered and hung from the ceiling as a numberline.
