I have to teach a year 2 class and got the lesson sorted for that..... However this morning I recieved the letter stating the details for the interview and they want me to take a piece of literacy work to illustrate the importance of literacy for discussion at the interview. My main problem is that the interview is Monday afternoon.... so time is really limited to gather work samples. I did a research project last year on writing in the role play corner with foundation stage children and wonder whether samples of the writing I gathered then would illustarte the importance of literacy or if I would be better using teacher directed literacy. What would also say if some asked you to outline the importance of literacy? Any ideas welcome.... Hi Lorna not much experience of interviews, but I would think your research project would be fine. What better place to start with literacy than in FS, where the emphasis is on children initiating their own Communication, Language and Literacy through role play and writing corners etc. It will also give you a balance between teacher initiated - the lesson, and child initiated activities. I don't really know what work you should take (should it be awful or fantastic? ) I guess the importance of literacy is that it underpins everything else we do. Whether rightly or wrongly, we measure educational progress by assessing how literate someone is: how well they speak, write and read -even how well-read they are. AnonyMouse_73 Posted May 6, 2006 Share Posted May 6, 2006 Hi Lorna, alwasy difficult to judge what they want when you are ebing interviewed isnt it? I think you research project sounds like a good idea and it shows your interest in literacy as an issue. I aslo thinks it illustrates how literacy affects everythng we do. Im sure you have done this already but its alwasy worth a look at the last OFSTED or any other info you have about the school as sometimes (often) they have an agenda. For example in our school we have a big poush on speakng and listening and its realtionship wioth later reading and writing and we were appointing a literacy cordinator, we would want someone who shared our vision on that. Id also have a quick read of the new literacy strategy proposals and haev an opinion on the rose report? (my Lea has decided to give no reagrd to the rose report and is not gong to abnadon or modify the searchlights model) Best of everything for Monday then, Im also in job hunt mode, so know how you feel, do let us now how it goes wont you? Guest Posted May 6, 2006 Share Posted May 6, 2006 What I would want to know in your situation, is what specialisms the interviewing panel have, i.e. are any of them early years based. The problem with asking us guys on here is that we all know and understand the importance of emergent writing and the first steps of actual writing, but I know some teachers aren't as appreciative of young children's first attempts at writing. Do you have a time limit for the talk about the piece of work? Could it be a piece of childs work which you scan and project onto whiteboard and discuss,or photocopy pieces for the panel then talk about the imput leading up to the writing,the reason for the piece ie audience the objective you wished to achieve and how the piece has met/not met the objective and how you have marked the work to help the child move on setting a target for the child. also what you need to do now to help child or class.... This could be a piece of reception writing eg write a list of party food for Toms birthday format would have been taught words going down page,discussion with class about shopping list, you would have read John Burningham The shopping Basket etc played in my shopping basket.... emergent writing would show initial letters? final letters sounds etc what you would expect your class to be doing at the stage in the Reception year. The writing is the end product ...speaking and listening eg to the story to the teacher and each other.....knowledge of letter sounds (phonics) and being able to represent them (handwriting physical)...context of the piece of written work ..drawing on the childs knowledge and understanding of the world...shopping/birthday parties.........etc etc As everyone has already said literacy is cross curricular. I have decided to take along the information from my research project which include independent writing- foundation stage and guided writing in foundation satge.
