Using 'old' Nvq Units Against 'new' Nvq

Does anyone know what happens if a candidate has to leave a training programme, working to the old-style NVQs, when they're only part-way through? I guess the completed units can be used towards the 'new' NVQs via APL, but I just wondered if anyone can shed any light on how this might be done. I'm asking on behalf of a friend who might be in this position before too long, so I hope I'm making sense!

Hi Weightman.

Don't know if it is the same thing, but I started my NVQ and fell pregnant 4 units in. I was told that I could carry on from where I left off once I had had the baby and returned to work, but then the goalpoasts changed again and I had to completely sign off the course and re-sign for it again. None of my awarded units could be carried over so I had to start the whole thing again from scratch. This was about 3 years ago, but obviously the course has changed since then.

Hi Clare,

It's the same sort of situation, student may have to sign off one programme & sign on another one. I'd been led to believe that completed units could count to new NVQ via APL, but that doesn't sound so good!

When I first signed up to the course, I was told that any completed units could be used as a part award (not sure what APL is though!) but when it came to it, they told me I couldn't, although when I signed on the second course after the baby, I used the completed units I had and (cheekily :o ) resubmitted them! Obviously because of the change in course set up, I had to make some adjustments, but luckily, that was better than having to re-write whole units! They were big units too, C15, C10 and M8, so although I was annoyed at having to start again, I didn't really miss out!

I hope your friend finds a way round her situation, because it is stressful, especially when you have got so far then have to re-start.

thanks Clare. That's certainly something to think about. BTW, APL = accreditation of prior learning.

Glad you did it in the end, anyway!

I'm afraid I think that, if your friend does have to re-register, it'll be the whole shebang again, as the standards changed quite significantly last October.

Sorry Weightman, but I was afraid that would be the case! And thanks, it took a while to complete, as I did the whole lot after having the baby. I went back to work when she was 3 months old (good old mum did the babysitting! xD ) and managed to do it in 15 months, so technically I did it with three months to spare!

Glad it's all over and done with now though, so I can concentrate on my Foundation Degree :o !!

Normally if units are current (less than 2 years old) she should be able to use some of it as APL. Our college is still finishing candidates who started on the old standards so she may be able to find somewhere where she can complete - did her college get the awarding body to certificate her completed units?
