Guest Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Does anybody have any brilliant schemes of work for PE: gymnastics, dance and games as my head would like me to teach a daily lesson as from September. I want to find a dance scheme that actually provides the music. At the moment I use top start. Thanks very much.
AnonyMouse_79 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Hi and welcome. I think the Tops Start / Tops Play stuff is adapted from the Val Sabin schemes which look very comprehensive although I have not actually worked with them. I have been using a Folens PE scheme on Supply but wouldnt recommend that unless it has been updated recently. Featherstone Education have a "Little Book of Dance " which comes with a CD but Im not familiar with that either, sorry!
Guest Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 We use one of the Val Sabin books which also has a Cd of music. Her web site can be found here. I use ours to dip into for all sorts of activities. We have the Action Kids 500 publication. I like it because it has ideas for warming up, main activities and then cooling down. Linda
AnonyMouse_2157 Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 Hi there we too use the Top Start scheme but I dont think it does enough to really get to grips with some elements of PE although its simplicity is great. The one we have doesn't cover dance either. Have you looked at the LCP schemes? you can find them here LCP We use their maths and art & design for the foundation stage and they are very comprenhensive without being too wordy. Easy layout and good prgression of skills. I have the little book of dance. There are some great things to dip in and dip out of and the accompanying CD has some lovely music but nothing that would offer progression of dance skills (more creative). The BBC do 'Let's move' in CD.They have a good one for Divali and winter that we use for dance in the term running up to Christmas. Just on a slightly different note, we always use 'Relax Kids' meditations for our 'cool downs'. They are absolutely fantastic as a calming way to finish off a very physical session. We use them in the classroom too. From Nursery to Year 2... check out their website as they have a great offer on at the moment 3 for 2. Relax Kids Hope this helps
Guest Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 (edited) We've just started to use the Val Sabin schemes - I find it much easier to fit in with themes/topics and the chldren really enjoy it. We used to use BBC Let's Move for dance which was very dry... in comparison Val Sabin is great, and it appears to be very flexible! Should also say, somehow we got our scheme free due to training our PE co-ordinator went on, not quite sure how we managed it, but also have built up strong links with local secondary schools through the training. Guest Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 When looking at planning for next year I was advised not to bother with PD for the first few weeks. We use a scheme of work (think it is the Top Start) How does everyone go about 'introducing' PD to Reception children? You know what I mean... the classroom management and unchanging etc. Do you just throw them in at the deep end or break it down?
Guest Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 We start with circle games and just get the children to remove shoes, socks and jumpers. After the first few weeks we get them to change into their PE kits and do more gymnastic type activities.
Guest Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 When we start formal PD sessions we start by changing into pumps and removing jumpers. When we start getting 'fully changed' , as my base in the FSU is quite small, we go to the hall. In the hall at first we get a hoop for each child and place it around the edge of the hall for them to fold their clothes and put shoes in when getting changed. We build up gradually to 3 to a hoop then a small grp of 5/6 to a hoop and begin to get them to put uniform inside their pump bags when they have got changed. As they go into Summer term, we get them to change in class to prepare them for Year 1 - we only have 2 group tables in the Rec base so we choose table people and floor people! In terms of dance we had Let's move (BBC) but we found we were getting them changed then the programmes didn't get them moving that much. Someone has recommended Sticky Kids series to me but I'm waiting for some money to order stuff. I also use Disney CDs. For other sessions we follow Durham scheme for Gym and games progression but don't know if some of it is a bit outdated now. Also the lesson plans sometimes cover too many activities and I have to slim them down a bit.
AnonyMouse_2776 Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 I got interested in this Val Sabin scheme you were talking about and went to read about it... but what also happens with other schemes... Reception always appears between two curriculums... ... in Action Kids and also in the ones of KS1 !!! Why don't publishers get to understand that Reception is now the last year of the Foundation Stage?
Guest Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 Thank you very much. The Val Sabin stuff looks great. Hopefully will get some funding from school
Guest Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 Can you only purchase the resources if you have been on one of the training courses?- I couldn't seem to find any prices or order information, except for the training.
AnonyMouse_4544 Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 Think its around £45-£50 not sure how to order
