Schema Theory In Reception

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

A plea to any reception teachers that incorporate schema theory into their teaching and learning. Please tell me about anything that you do, however small that relates to this or know of anyone that could help (including nursery colleagues). I know of nurseries and early excellence centres that use schema theory to help analyse children's interests and support and extend their learning but noone seems to be doing anything with reception children that I know of. :o

Hi Clare

I'm a Reception Teacher who is interested in schema theory, but I'm not very clear on the application of this idea to older children. I have seen plenty of evidence of a child's persistent concerns expressed through 'action-thinking' in my own children before they went to school and in Nursery children I have observed, not so much in Reception! Last year I had a little boy who definitely was exploring trajectory and I was driven to devise some activities for him as his exploration of this was at times highly inappropriate, e.g. throwing cars across an area of provision! Perhaps as the child gets older the development of language and other forms of representation transform schema into other kinds of behaviour?

Hi Pau

Thank you for replying - I didnt think id get much feedback on this topic so your contribution is really valued :D Where have you read about schema theory (ive read Nutbrown, some of Athey, Bruce and an undergrad dissertation of a case study in Penn Green nursery and had info sent from Bridgwater Early Excellence Centre) or have you gone on a course? Also you're wondering exactly the same as me - where do children go on from schemas once they start to connect and higher order thinking skills come in? Im going to try to read Athey again as she goes into alot of detail (which is why i left it before!). Im doing a masters and feeling very stuck!

Hi Clare -

Schemas is one of those strange hybrid beasties where there is a lot of interest but not many people seem to know a lot about it, so I'm sorry but not surprised you've not had a great response. Believe me I'd love to have more information available, so if anyone feels they could write an article I'd be delighted to publish it here!

There have been a few conversations on the forum though, so I thought I'd provide you with a couple of links in case they mention stuff you're not aware of:

Sorry unable to help.

I heard Tina Bruce speak on using schemas for observations and it was interesting but don't know how to use or develop this so haven't persued it in any way.
